Canes Deal (D) Lenny Hackman to ICE

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have made a trade with the Kootenay Ice sending veteran defenceman Lenny Hackman to the Ice for a 12th round WHL Bantam pick in 2015.

“We can’t thank Lenny enough for the outstanding contributions he has made to our hockey club on the ice and in the community for the past three seasons” commented Hurricanes General Manager and Head Coach Peter Anholt. “I’m glad we were able to make a trade where he’s able to continue his hockey career.”

Hackman, was the Hurricanes 9th round (179th overall) Bantam pick in 2010 and played never missed a game in his first two seasons. The Airdrie, AB native has been one of the Hurricanes top blueliners throughout his career was named Top Defenceman last season. The 5’9, 183 pound 19-year old leaves the Hurricanes with 175 career WHL games played and 21 points (4G, 17A).

  1. Clearly he wasn't in the plans for next year, better to get a pick than let him walk. All the best Lenny.

  2. This shows the state of the team. Our top D man from last year is worth a 12th round pick. Mother Hubbard might replace Twister as the teams mascot given the state of the cupboard.

  3. Oh those highly coveted 12th round picks. Might be a sleeper pick in the 12th round. (like a new cheerleader).

  4. I realize that a 12th is akin to nothing, but I still feel Anholt did something good here. He has given a player who has always done what was asked of him, worked hard, never complained a chance to play for a decent team. Good luck Lenny, thanks for all you hard work.

  5. Focus on the past all you want SKU RJS. Hackman is a good kid by all accounts, but let's be honest, he cant be a 19 or 20 year old guy taking up ice time from developing your 17 year olds, of which there are now 4 on the blueline. Another good move by Anholt, paying zero attention to the bad moves by the last guy, focused solely on the future. And, this team is no worse than it was 3 weeks ago before he took over, that is a certainty. You guys complained for years how crappy the team is and then when guys get traded to make the team better you complain about that, LOL.

    1. How are you? This is the second time I've read about you Ranting that people are complaining when in fact every post is Praising the Trades and the work of our new GM. Nobody is complaining except you.
I'm liking the trades as well. Happy Camper :)

    2. You are right. Trading our top d man for an irrelevant pick did make the canes better. My bad.

  6. Gee, maybe I was insinuating disappointment in the fact that all Anholt could get for Lenny was a 12th round pick. Hackman is a good kid, and you are right about the development of the 17yr olds. As for complaining for years, my only complaints were about the moves made or not made. It did not take a rocket scientist to know the level of success this team was going to have, based on what they had and the coaching. Anholt so far is delivering on what he stated, get bigger, get younger and get more talented.

  7. Hackman has been playing at the same level for 2 seasons now... he doesn't continue to improve..... Giving him the chance to STILL play in the WHL is very admirable of Anholt to do. Let our BIG young defense corp play and get better. So a 12th round is nothing, but at least he didnt send him home and get nothing!!
