(F) Reid Duke Rejoins Lethbridge Hurricanes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Reid Duke returned to the hockey club on Thursday.

General Manager, Brad Robson says “the hockey club, Reid Duke, his family and agent came to an agreement beneficial to both sides.”

Duke is expected to play in the second game of the tournament the team is competing at this weekend in Regina.

(From Esther Madziya, Hurricanes Media Relations)

Duke was suspended by the team last week for failing to report to training camp. His absence was a surprise to many. GM Robson told me earlier this week that he had been working hard to try and find a resolution to the issue. It appears he has.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Thanks for the confirmation of what I had been told. This will prove to be very interesting as Duke has some serious fence mending to do with his teammates, the coaching staff and fans. "A agreement that is beneficial to both sides". Is that statement open for all kinds of interpretations.

  2. I would have to assume the agreement must be about his role with the team. There is no benefit to him returning while they pursue trade options. He has an outstanding chance to be a leader the help with the transformation of this team. If I was looking to sign an NHL deal within the next two years I would see this as a great chance to prove ones worth.

  4. My guess is that Duke's camp has decided that a trade may happen faster if he is back with the team. Then BR can say it was his idea to trade him

  5. I believe the deal was done on threats..you want a trade you come back and we will see..unfortunately Duke, just not showing was not good..Erkamps on the other hand let the team know he wanted out at the end of the season....Not sure why BR said to the press that he was shocked that he did not show up for camp...

  6. I honestly don't think Duke is going anywhere soon. They wouldn't put him in that room knowing a trade was imminent. He will be with the team till the deadline if not longer based on how things go.

  7. I suspect a deal has been made whereby if the team is not in a playoff position by the trade deadline the team has agreed to trade him. Its all about the playoffs and if he can show in the playoffs it will help his chances to sign his NHL deal. CD

  8. I think Duke is a natural leader. He's a great example for the rest of the players especially the younger ones. They should make him captain, first line centre and play every pp and pk and the coaches should ask him who he plays with.

    1. LOL...leaders are not selfish, they put the team first, they don't stay home and request trades! Being drafted (5th) round or being drafted in any round means nothing other than someone believes that player may have an opportunity at the next level? After being drafted is when the real work begins on and off the ice! Being drafted is entitlement to then do whatever you want! There should have been a team suspension for not showing up at camp? (Another weak management decision to allow him back with zero repercussion???) likely when Minnisota got wind of his selfish holdout, he was told to get his head out of his *ss and get to camp and start work! Duke is a perfect example of what drafted players should NOT do! No NHL team will ever deal with premadonna attitudes, ever! And there will not be a single player on the Lethbridge roster that will ever accept him as a leader, let alone a captain...he will be extremely fortunate to earn back any respect he may have had at the end of last season! Hockey is a team sport, individual thinking players are weeded out by the game! Good luck Duke!

  10. What Duke's actions have shown is that players, parents, agents and teams have no confidence at all in the Hurricanes ability to develop NHL caliber players. This is sadly a proven fact if you look at the Canes draft results or lack thereof since Preston took over. To 100% put this on the kid without looking at why he did it is as shortsighted as thinking last year was bad because the players did not buy into the system. You would think he would have been in camp from day 1 if Minnesota told him to. I have a feeling they supported and possibly encouraged his move to hold out. Time to stop blaming the kids. Look at the cause of the problem rather than the outcome.

  11. I'm sorry? The Minnesota Wild encouraged Reid Duke to not report and demand a trade? You think that is the type of behaviour they are looking to bring into their system? If they don't want him in Lethbridge they have other options that won't set themselves up for the same treatment someday. You're probably right about this not being just Reid.
