Lethbridge Hurricanes Unveil New Look

This logo will be on the white away jersey
The Lethbridge Hurricanes unveiled a new logo and jersey Thursday at the ENMAX Centre.

Late last year, the Hurricanes were informed by the NHL that the club could no longer use the current logo. In the months and weeks that followed, the Hurricanes formed a committee, reached out to three different designers and with Reebok, created a new brand and look.

Board President Brian McNaughton says the Canes want a brand to be proud of, that lasts with integrity and authenticity.

The hockey club feels this look represents the community, fans, players, and it celebrates the passion, excitement, and love for the game of hockey. The Hurricanes also announced a partnership with Lethbridge Minor Hockey that all Rep teams will be adopting the new logo on their uniforms and they'll also be known as the Lethbridge Junior Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes will continue using the white jersey for their away colours and the a red jersey for home. The logo on the red jersey will see the colours reversed as in the photo below.

I spoke with Hurricanes Business Manager Terry Huisman about the change and the meaning behind the new stylized "H" logo.

  1. How come the NHL is not raising a stink with Portland WinterHawks jersey?

  2. I'm not exactly blown away with the new logo. I was expecting something more elaborate than this. (No "L" for Lethbridge?) Anyway......as long as the on-ice product improves.

Slap Shot......the Kitchner Rangers also have the same jersey's as New York, but not stink made for them either. I guess their NHL clubs don't care?

  4. How long before Carolina asks them to change uniforms again. Take out the H and you have a Carolina logo, even same colors. Kaos

  5. I can't see this logo being a hit with kids and therefore souvenier sales could be a little slow. It is original and nobody can tell us we can't use it. When Drumheller played on TV the team from down east had the exact logo of the Washington Capitals so why do we have to stop? Probably "Hurricanes" (Carolina) and "Capitals" don't want the association. Should be a good year so we won't be dwelling on the logo, but rather the numbers in the win column.

  7. It is new and "ours". Like it or not, the logo is not a spin off of some other club. Despite the poison being spread by a former Hurricane Captain, fans and players can make their own choice to embrace it or not.

As for the Kitchener Rangers; the explanation is quite simple. Back in the days of the Original Six teams they all had direct ties to their junior clubs. In fact anyone who played for a junior club or their affiliates signed a contract with the NHL team. Thus all the players playing for the Kitchener Rangers were property of the NY Rangers. Kitchener has maintained the nickname with the permission of NY. Another example was the Hamilton Red Wings Jr "A" and Burlington Jr "B" were tied to Detroit.

That I believe is the reason why Kitchener has not had to remove the Rangers name.

  8. The "poison" from Brody Sutter is a honest window into what some players think of the board of directors. What most did not see is that he deleted his first tweet that contained #incompitentboard, then he took that out after 5 minutes of reflection. The tweet was a complaint about the BOD, not necessarily the logo. Versteeg has voiced similar concerns about how the BOD handles operations. If you ignore what these players are saying you are lying to yourself on the reputation of the organization. This is a reason why players demand trades, state that they will not play for us or quit.

I have read a rumor that the jersey was designed by a relative of a board member. I would like to know if this is fact or fiction so if the Hurricanes have any "accountability" (as they put it) they will please provide an answer to whether or not this rumor is true. It was Reebok and 3 others as stated on this blog. When it was a former WCHS student who designed the jersey the team was proud to announce that fact and I hope they do the same this time.

Alas complaining about the BOD is like complaining about the government. Many do it but nothing ever comes of it. Time to look ahead to a very interesting season.

PS Is there anything Johnny Hogue will not do for this team. Great kid!

  9. I just find it hard to understand how a player who was a 4th line player at best with another team, is requested in a trade, eventually ends up with an "A" and then a "C" on his jersey and then badmouths the team that gave him the opportunity. Brody is entitled to his opinion as we all are. But, in my opinion I don't understand the reasoning behind his verbal barrage. I guess I am old school. I am not defending the action of the current board; but regardless who is on the BOD, who gets to be on it, there will always be complaints. As for selling the team, the BOD does not have any say in the matter. That is totally up to the shareholders. Justified or not, there is a core of people in this city that will not put the past behind them. The rumor of the jersey design is not a rumor as Pat has posted a release regarding that. Unfortunately it will open the flood gates of questions as to why?

  10. Dump'n Chase I have to agree with everything you say. When he was traded here it was because he was having no impact where he was and they were disappointed with his play. You can say what you want about Preston but he coached this kid well enough that he developed him into an AHL player. I think the ego we heard so much about when he was here has just gotten worse. It is fine to have an opinion but unless you were done horribly wrong (which he obviously wasn't) sometimes it shows more character when you keep your opinions to yourself.

  11. I've wondered how much of his comments on twitter are from his uncles who have been trying to buy the team for years and are constantly denied for no apparent reason. I know Brody fairly well and he is a very respectful and nice individual who is opinionated but a straight shooter. I'm sure Pat can attest to this?

Also he was a 4th line WHL player when he was traded here, but typically most 17 year old un drafted rookies are. Also, in Brody's defense he has never bashed the former coaches or anything. Most players at least had a minor "parting jab" at Rich Preston and Matt Kabayama on twitter. Brody's "jabs" have strictly been at the board because of his opinion the the team needs private ownership.

    And to Dump'N''Chase,
Brody was a 4th liner his first 2 years. He even admits that. But to call him a 4th liner on "any other team" is just not true. He put up 102 pts in 111 games his last 2 season on non playoff teams. Legit top 6 numbers if you ask me.

  12. Canes Billet,
I believe I stated at 4th liner at best with another team. I certainly did not want to create the impression that his career here was as a fourth line player, which he certainly was not.

  13. No apparent reason??? How about the fact that the team has NEVER been offered up for sale?? How about the fact that if the team ever was put up for sale there is no guarantee that the league would allow it to be sold to the Sutters.

As for Brody's comments, whether directed at the team or the BOD they come off as arrogant and ungreatful towards a team that stuck by him when he was less than impressive. If it is his uncles talking through him, shame on them.

Regardless, to my knowledge the Hurricanes are not for sale whether your name is Sutter or anything else.

  14. I hope I do not have to repeat this again. There is only one group of people who can put the For Sale sign up for the Hurricanes. It is not the board of directors, it is not the GM, it is not the Business Manager, the City of Lethbridge, it is not the Enmax Centre, it is not a group that feels they are entitled to own the franchise; IT IS ONLY THE SHAREHOLDERS!

  15. Dump'n Chase; I agree, it's the shareholders who should be in control of the team. Unfortunately, the BOD President has come out twice in the past year on TV and stated that "the team is not for sale", which leaves the impression that the shareholders don't have a say in the direction of the team and it's the BOD who are in control.

As a shareholder, if push came to shove and I felt the BOD were not operating the team properly, I would make that known to them personally at a meeting and push for a vote on the sale of the franchise. But right now, I'm more than willing to let the new GM and Coach take their stab at getting this team back on track. I felt the removal of Preston and Kabayama was warranted and now it's up to Brad Robson and his hire (Berehowsky).

  16. All of these posts are a direct reflection of why the team can't function properly, so much scrutiny around political finagling and not enough focus on the game. Go play hard! that's it. If you're a fan...go cheer! Have fun! It's just hockey.

  17. Anonymous 15:35 (I didn't think Anonymous comments were going to be posted anymore?):

These comments shouldn't have ANY influence on how the Board of Directors does their job (positively or negatively). If these comments bother them, they need to step down because they're not focused on the task at hand.

Some of us are more than just fans. We are part of a group of people who helped bring the Hurricanes back to Lethbridge. It's not just about "cheering". It's about making sure the franchise if being run properly and professionally. Yes, it's "just hockey", but some of us want something to cheer for beyond the end of March.
