Hurricanes Name Drake Berehowsky Head Coach

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have officially announced the WHL team's new Head Coach.

Former NHLer Drake Berehowsky will be the new man in charge behind the bench, replacing Rich Preston who was let go a few months ago. General Manager Brad Robson made the announcement outside the Hurricanes dressing room Monday morning. Berehowsky becomes the 12th coach in Lethbridge Hurricanes history and tells me he's very excited to be moving his family to Lethbridge and to be part of the WHL.

Berehowsky has extensive experience as a player with six NHL teams, but also as an Assistant Coach in the AHL with Peoria and in the OHL with Barrie and Brampton.  GM Robson says Berehowsky's coaching experience and his high performance coaching certification with Hockey Canada shows how well prepared he is.

I had a chance to speak with both Drake and Brad about the hiring.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. This might be stating the obvious, but this is a critical hire for this organization.

  2. A good move a younger coach who can relate to the game today not like Rich who was old school. Good move Brad.

  3. Hard to fathom the negative comments being posted elsewhere.
In talking with Drake it is obvious he has a plan and a design for this club. The players have lacked discipline on and off the ice and that is going to change.
Being only 41 and having played in the NHL, been an assistant coach in the OHL and AHL along with his short stint in the ECHL (expansion team with the 2nd best record for an expansion team and the 2nd best penalty kill) sounds good to me. I have always said (like many others) that these players need to be taught, developed and learn systems. Here we go!

  4. I do not put too much stock in the negative comment being posted elsewhere as well! With the new coach having in excess of 500 games as a D man in the NHL this has got to help guys like Pilon and the other young talented D man we have. Now go get an asst coach that has a background as a forward and our team will be set. There is a lot of young talent on the Canes that is waiting to explode! Go Canes looking forward to a strong year.
