Lethbridge Hurricanes Golf Classic Sold Out

In what has been the off-season of change for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, there's been another re-branding within the organization.

The hockey club's annual golf tournament, which takes place each July has been known as the Hurricanes/Broncos Alumni Tournament since its inception, but with the recent change around the team's logo, organizers of the golf event have decided to switch the name of the tournament to the Hurricanes Golf Classic.

Alumni Chair Dick Gibson says the focus of the tournament is still the alumni. He notes with the change in logo and look, it was decided they would change the name of the annual event as well.  Gibson says this is the first time the tournament has been a sellout with more than 144 golfers set to tee off at Paradise Canyon on July 5th, 2013.

It was only three years ago attendance was so low, organizers had considered pulling the plug on the golf tournament all together, but Gibson says it's bigger than ever and continues to grow in popularity.  He attributes that to the "incredible" amount of support from local corporate sponsors and notes the money being brought in is way up over last year as well.

Gibson says there's a good contingent of alumni playing this year including Carter Bancks, Zach Boychuk, Colton Sceviour, and Mike Wuchterl just to name a few. There is a also a $600,000 hole-in-one event which he feels is an attractive incentive for golfers.

All the money raised goes toward funding projects like the recent naming of the new media gondola at the ENMAX Centre as the Steve "Foggy" Falwell Media Centre, name plaques in and around the Hurricanes dressing room, as well as a number of other things over the years.

Gibson says changing the name of tournament does not exclude the alumni. He says that's still the main focus, but with the team doing a major re-branding , it was felt changing the name of the golf tournament was following that same direction.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. This has nothing to do with the golf tournament but I could not help but think of what the Flames, Hitmen and Roughnecks are going to be faced with over the next few months. And despite being bitter rivals, I certainly hope that the city of Medicine Hat and the Tigers get through with a little damage as possible with what they are about to face.

  2. From what I have seen, the Medicine Hat Arena has sustained flood damage. Not sure as to the extent? On a positive note, there will be some time to get things cleaned up before hockey season arrives. My thoughts go out to all those affected in Alberta. Brutal, just brutal.
