Hurricanes Deal Phil Tot Tri-City Americans

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Tuesday they have traded veteran Forward Phil Tot to the Tri-City Americans for a 2nd round pick in 2014 and a 5th round pick in 2013.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes would like to thank Phil for his contributions on and off the ice the past three seasons.

We were able to fulfill his request to start a new chapter in his hockey career and wish him all the best. Hurricanes Head Coach and GM Rich Preston added “the second and fifth round picks are good assets that we can use down the road to acquire a player to fill a need or to use in the draft.”

Tot played three seasons with the Canes and had a breakout year in 2011-2012 after being hampered by injuries the previous two seasons. In his rookie campaign in 2009-2010 Tot registered 10 points (3G, 7A) and a year later he had a 21 point season in 58 games. The 18-year old from Calgary, AB finished with 45 points (14G, 31A) in 61 games last year. He was third in team scoring, was a minus 24 plus/minus rating and he added 37 PIM’s.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Is this a joke ? There must be more to come or Tot was going to refuse to report to camp? You trade your third highest leading point producer and get draft picks??? Sutter , Braes and Tot gone from last year? Who is going to put points on the board?? There needs to be more of an explanation...and quick! Scott

  2. Says something about an organization when your veterans and decent ones like Tot want out. Ownership should be taking note....It leaves the team with 1 19 year old forward Ramsey....19 year olds forwards were always identified as a weakness and its a huge hole that Canes can only fill by giving up some picks and maybe excess 20 year olds..

  3. Good luck Phil. Hopefully you can learn from someone that knows how to coach. He is not the only veteran that is not happy here so we will see what is next. AJ

  7. The 9 year plan to make the playoffs is only half way there. A little patience please. Come on, we have to give Rich a chance to draft those players in 2013. Then they can develop them so that we can make a run in 2016-17. As for the question is this a joke? The answer is no. Jokes are funny the first few times. This is just getting pathetic. Looking foreword to the canes getting back at it, just not sure my blood pressure can handle another year of the same old story.

  8. Wow!

Makes me wonder who will be next in asking Preston for a ticket out of town....

At least we have a proven goalie back there this season. If we can't score, we gotta be good at keeping the goals against down.... :-/

  9. Tot wanted to go to a playoff contender...seems to me that Tri Cities is in the rebuilding mode also. Tot does have a history of injures including concussions. Looks like they may have given up a fair amount to get him or the Hurricanes got a fair amount to unload an unhappy player. My main concern is that Preston has left himself very thin with the 19's and other teams will be asking a lot when he comes knocking. As of right now, Ramsay would be our only overage in 2013-14.
I can understand a player, any player wanting to be in the playoffs..but I can also remember Carter Bancks turning down an offer to be moved in his 20th year to stay with the team and help the kids out. I will take character over a character anytime.

  10. I would've liked to see some bodies coming back instead of draft picks. If Tot wanted out, fine, but at least get some bodies. Darren

  11. In the past 2 weeks, three very strange events coming from the club... it's been rumoured that the new business manager has resigned one month in, at least one veteran asked for a trade, and the club invited the public to come down to buy used hockey equipment...
It sure sounds like the club is out of cash... and since no one has made an offer to buy the club, I hope this downward spiral continues because then the league will have to finally intervene and save the fans and, MORE importantly, the players!!

  12. tot's a slug, he's done nothing to show that he belongs in this league..we get a 5th rounder next year and a 2nd rounder the year after for a player that shouldn't even be in the league, quit your crying preston unloaded a dud for a good return. good job rich.

  13. Anonymous 11:53. Very perceptive.

  14. If he wants out let him go with good return. Rich should have packaged a 20 and a pick or two for a good young player then let Tot go.

  15. This is a suprise but if I am Preston I dont want to go into camp with players who dont want to be there. There are a lot of talented young players, and players that the Canes are expecting a big sophmore year from for example Merkley, Watson, Yakabowski, Mckechnie, Erkamps, Leverton plus expecting good rookie years from Duke, Pilon and Bloomquist...to have veterans complaining about being in Lethbridge is a cancer to a winning attitude. Canes should pick a veteran leader with a strong work ethic like Johnston as Captain early and start developing that hard working and winning attitude from day 1 of camp. With the amount of picks and overagers that that the Canes have they should have no problem picking up a couple of decent 19 or 18 year old forwards. I think the team is going to be fast and skilled which is something we have not seen much of in the last three years...I have no problem with Preston cleaning up any attitude issues before camp starts. 16. The attitude issues are a direct result of Preston. Don't blame the kids when this happens over and over every year of his tenure with the team. I think that is what is being missed here. Any good boss and leader knows that it is his responsibility to develop a culture within the organization. Is it possible that the reason he only gets picks in trades is that players are not willing to come here. I think that is the case. Preston is the coach/GM so he has 100% control and responsibility for the performance and team atmosphere. Who else do you put the blame on?

  17. 11:53...There is more to the resigning of the new business manager than him wanting out. I would think there will be an honest explanation of the situation. As for the Hurricanes selling used equipment, this is not the first time they have done this. Rather than throw out equipment that can't be used, they offer it for sale.

Back to the team.....this team as of right now will be made up of 3 overages, 1-19, a few 18's and the bulk of the team 16-17's. I can't imagine what will happen when they face the likes of Edmonton again this season. Scarey!

  18. What a dilemma for the team management. It can be very problematic keeping player's around that don't want to be here but at the same time if you accomodate all of the unhappy player's requests you may not have much of a team left.

  19. SKU....didnt Preston get Rimmer for picks and get Buonassisi , Galbraith for Cane cast offs? Kids want to play on a winning team bottom line. From the very casual association with the players that I have met, they have few gripes with Preston...but despise the assistant coach behind the bench and training staff. Players have made the same complaints for 3 or 4 years without being listened too...So yes Preston is responsible for the support staff that deal most directly with the players and he has refused to address the issue so from that point of view you are correct...RG

  20. The business guy from Ontario had a medical emergency with his wife, moved home where there will be some help looking after her. Can't blame Preston or the board for that one, can you?

    ReplyDelete
  21. ANON 3:12.....good on you! You obviously know the mentality of some ....some people in this city. They will go to great lengths to find a twist on the Harris situation so they can blame either Preston (who has no say in the hiring of a business manager) or the Board.

I for one, regardless of how young this team is, regardless of what players do not want to play here (me first attitude?), and regardless of what transpires over this season; I will be in my seat cheering on the team.....the team of players!

Does that mean I have no concerns? Nope! Just a loyal fan!

  22. I think most blame Preston and the board for anything and everything. Does anyone know if M. Soffilas will attend camp this year or is his hockey days over? AJ? You seem to know the ins and outs of the team and where the players are at?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mike Sofillas will be here. Just a reminder to all he was the fan favorite award winner the season before last. With good health he can add great work ethic to this team.
This season will be fun to watch.

  24. Great work ethic, attitude and he is 19 yrs old. Hope he is healthy but still want Rich to trade to get a top 18 yr old. Not sure what we could get for our 20yr olds, I think our dmen are strong enough to trade Johnston to get the most return and keep Landon, Hood and Rimmer?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Trade Johnston? Because an undrafted overage d-man who scored two goals despite being the ONLY power play option on the team will fetch what on the trading block? A pair of draft picks? That would really turn things around.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes trade Johnston the overage undrafted dman that has the most value of the 6 we have (excluding Rimmer). I thought we got a first and second for an undersized undrafted forward at the deadline last year and I would assume those picks have value to help turn our team around? Get the most return because we have 3 to many. Package some of those worthless picks we have obtained and Johnston for a high end 18 yr old.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Johnston would fetch a decent forward...he had 30 points in 55 games and was on the second (not first) powerplay unit behind Oslanski and Erkamps but more importantly was an even plus minus defenceman on a team with a terrible plus minus while logging a lot of minutes against opponents top players and he was the most physical D man...having said that the the D without Henry is not that strong and Oslanski was
-31 so I wouldnt trade Johnston and keep Oslanski unless I could get a forward and a good defensive D man....TD

  28. We got Rimmer for draft picks its all about need and I think we can definitly get a forward to replace Tot for picks and one of our overagers but not Johnston. He is a physical anchor and by far our best defenceman on what will be a very young defence and if is healthy will probably put up 40 points this year....I am sure Canes will find another forward and I expect that with more ice time the likes of Merkel, Watson Yakowbowski will be putting up some nice numbers this year ...you also have to choose between Buonassissi and Hood and one of them with some picks could also get some decent players in return. Unless you were getting a 70 point scoring forward in return I wouldnt move Johnston....Scott

  29. @ bob.......Tot had a career year last year. He could (possibly) have had an 80pt. season this year. He was also one of the few forwards with some size.

I'm not upset they traded him. He wanted to be traded. I'm disappointed they only got draft pics in return. THEY NEED BODIES NOT MORE DRAFT PICKS! Especially 19 year old bodies.

  31. Well Oslanski has been picked up by Everett so the overage situation just got a little clearer.....good luck Landon...Scott
