Hurricanes Prospects at TELUS Cup

Three Lethbridge Hurricanes prospects continue their season this week as the Western and Pacific Regionals for the TELUS Cup get underway.

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan hosts the Western Regional Championships starting today with the host Mintos opening the tournament against the Thunder Bay Kings. After finishing the season third in the SMAAAHL standings with a record of 28-11-4-1, the Mintos playoff run ended in the Semi-Finals with a loss to the Battlefords Stars. The Hurricanes drafted Mintos Forward Kody White in the 11th round in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft and he finished the season with 23 points (9G, 14A) in 44 games. The 17-year old then added a goal and an assist in the playoffs.

The puck drops on the Pacific Regional Championships Friday night in Red Deer where the Chiefs host the Okanagan Rockets. The best of three series features a pair of Hurricanes prospects going to head to head as Tanner Browne (Rockets) squares off against Andrew Nielsen(Chiefs). Both Defencemen put up similar numbers through the regular season with Neilsen registering 18 points (3G, 15A) in 35 games while Browne tallied 22 points (5G, 17A) in 40 games. The 6’4, 230 lb. Nielsen followed up with 5 assists in 11 playoff games, while the 5’11, 201 lb. Browne had 1G, 2A in 6 postseason games. Game 2 of the Pacific Regional is Saturday and Game 3, if necessary, will be played Sunday afternoon in Red Deer.
