Lethbridge Hurricanes GM and Head Coach Rich Preston announced this morning the Canes have traded veteran defenseman Brennan Yadlowski to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for the Tips second round selection in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft and a fifth round selection in 2012. When combined with the 1st round pick the Canes received last season from Regina as part of the Carter Ashton trade, Lethbridge currently holds four picks in the first two rounds of the 2011 Bantam Draft the year after making four selections in the first two rounds of the 2010 Bantam Draft.
Yadlowski was a fifth round pick and the first defenseman chosen by the Hurricanes in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft (97th overall). Yadlowski broke into the league as a 16 year old d-man with the Canes and was awarded both the Canes Most Improved Player award and Scholastic Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons (07-08, 08-09). He was a member of the Canes 2008 WHL Eastern Conference Championship team and in 08-09 was the Canes ironman as the only player to play in all 72 regular season games. In the summer of 2009 he attended his first NHL Training Camp with the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent and was named one of the Hurricanes four Alternate Captains for the 09-10 Season. He finished last season with a career season with 34 points (3G,31A) and was named winner of the 2009-10 Hurricanes Top Defenseman Award
“Brennan is a very solid veteran defenseman, who has a lot of history with this club as a Hurricanes bantam draft pick who has played all three of his WHL seasons in a Canes jersey” said Preston “We want to wish him all the very best with the Everett Silvertips and in his future hockey endeavors”
The Canes and Silvertips are no strangers to making moves – in 08-09 the club traded forward Dan Iwanski and defenseman Alex Theriau (Terry-Oh); along with a 1st round draft pick in the 2009 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for 2008 NHL first round draft pick Kyle Beach and a conditional 6th round Bantam Draft pick; the same pick used for B.C. prospect Braxton Bilous.

Pat - please explain this one to me - trade your best dman for 2 draft choices next year - has Preston given up on the year already. So much for his " we're making playoffs this year "
ReplyDeleteCan't believe we couldnt get a scoring forward for Yadlowski?? Maybe there is more to come...
ReplyDeleteTD
I get the idea of stocking draft picks but what are you doing for us no ? trading a player and not getting a player back. Leaves me scratching my head ..
ReplyDeleteR.J.
The same thoughts crossed my mind too, fellas. I'm kind of thinking the same as TD. Perhaps there is more to come. There is no doubt, players like Johnston, Oslanski, and Jackson will be heavily relied on to fill that void as the young up and comers on defence.
ReplyDeletenow were down to 6 d to. Maybe Ross goes back to D
ReplyDeletewow abit of a head shaker, i would have bet one of our dmen would be going down south but not for a pick..tri is loaded with forward and lacking on dmen...wonder why that didn't work........love all the picks in the last years/this years draft but it makes for painfull hockey now...time will tell.
ReplyDeleteThis is a head shaker for sure. Stock piling draft picks for a future deal for a top notch 18 goal scorer, I would certainly understand. But if the trade is made as is.....and losing your top point man on the PP for nothing in return.....is a head shaker.
ReplyDeleteBut...being an optomist, maybe it was a deal made in order to pull off a bigger deal.

Looks to me like this is the start of other trades. Preston won't leave 6 defence, I don't think. Based on Yad's play the few games I have seen, I am not surprised. I am sure he's a super kid, but the two on one's because he's out of position, turn overs and not coving his man infront of the net causing goals against have made me wonder about his veteran standing compared to some other d men. This move makes me want to watch closely cause something big is coming.
ReplyDeleteTo make a big trade you have to have something to offer,, the canes are too young and have to little experiance as of yet for the other teams to offer lots and when you finish in the bottom everyone wants to take your future for nothing.. I am still not sure preston understands the junior game I watch him and listen to him and I think he is riding on his old memories..I hope I am wrong.
ReplyDeleteK.T.
Preston has coached in the WHL before...strong teams are always looking draft picks...now he has some to deal with...Robson has been around for years as well this is not their first rodeo so I don't think this is the end of the deals...TD
ReplyDeleteYes but just like any rodeo sometimes your time has passed.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you ever trade one of your top d-man for a couple of draft picks? Now the hurricanes defense is even younger and more inexperienced with Yadlowski. Sometimes a just don't get the trades that Presten does.
ReplyDeleteI think it's easy to see what is happening here. The Canes are trying to get the memorial cup and one of the criteria is to have a competitive team. The team is putting all their eggs in the 2013 basket so to speak. Last years draft and this year stockpile proove that. Why else would we mortgage the present? When presenting the bid they can say yes we suck but look at all the talent that we will have when the cup comes around. I am trying to rationalize what a 5th rounder in 2 years does for us. Chiropractors in Lethbridge are going to be busy with all the head shaking going on! At least beer sales could help the team out because I think that may get me through another season. Over under canes fans. 12.5 goals by the D this year? I sure am glad we signed Preston to a long tearm deal for 2 pay cheques.
ReplyDeleteHurricanes D is not young...A 20 year old a 19 year old 3 18 year olds and 1 17 year old...most teams are playing with more 17 year olds and often a 16 year old. The D is not the problem even without Yadlowski...scoring up front is.
ReplyDeleteWow the team is .500 after starting 5 games on the road vs going 0-6 to start last season and fans have not even seen the team yet and are already gripping about the coach...does Lethbridge even deserve a WHL team with fans like that??? GO OIL KINGS!
ReplyDeletepreston said yesterday that the picks could be used down the road to aquire players to fill in any spot that is needed... as for the mem cup the picks we have aquired for yads will not do much for the 2013 event, 16/17 years olds will not win you the cup 19/18 years old will...the problem here is everyone want secondary scoring, everyone wants to see the big trades and they want it now,(myself included) but preston is just not a panicy person he sits back and takes a good long look at what he has before he makes any kind of move....as a fan it boring as a gm it probably a good thing...
ReplyDeleteI think you have hit the nail on the head Bob. People need to just relax for a bit and see what Mr. Preston has up his sleeve. I am willing to bet there is more to come.
ReplyDeleteCould Fred Jack address how wrong he was on the media roundtable when he said no way does Yadlowski get dealt? You'd think that newspaper guy had inside knowledge the way he said Yadlowski was the guy to go...
ReplyDeleteDylan (the newspaper guy)
OK Dylan (the NewsPaper Guy),in your humble opinion (LOL) does this trade for two draft picks make you think (as do I) that Preston has something else cooking that requires draft pick/picks to sweeten a deal for a consistent goal scoring forward (likely an 18 year old)?
ReplyDeleteRJS
Mr. Purcell, thanks for stopping by. Quick question for you, before I answer yours for me. Wasn't this trade supposed to happen two weeks ago in your humble opinion? Anyways, as you predicted it has occured. What I stated then, and I remain consistent in saying now is I (if I were the GM) would not have dealt my top defenseman (hands down the Canes best blueliner IMO) for assets that can't help you right away. We know that no athlete is untouchable. Wayne Gretzky proved that and Randy Moss reinforced that today. However, if this team is to be a playoff team this year as Rich preston has said over and over again then this move simply doesn't add up. The minimum return for me on a Yadlowski deal had to have been a very good second line centre, and either a 16 year old defense prospect or a 3rd round draft pick. I think Yadlowski is a 45 point guy this year and if he stays healthy and is used right could hit the 50 point plateau. Those are big time numbers, especially for a team that is struggling to find enough offense. Also, in all likelihood you have him back as a 20 year old next year. How good would Braes, Fyten and Yadlowski look as 20 olds in Canes' jerseys? I would take that three pack as my overagers any day. It's likely Preston will follow this move up by acquiring a live body over the next couple of weeks. The problem is I don't think you can get as skilled of a D-man for a pick that will be in all likelihood lower than 32nd overall next year and a later pick for a player that can make the type of impact Yadlowski can. I wish Brennan all the best, and look forward to seeing everyone else at the Enmax Centre this weekend.
ReplyDeletehope all you optomists are correct & that something else is happening. i don't think preston can afford to wait. this team needs every point they can get now if they realistically expect playoffs. once reners & sutter are healthy they have too many fwds. lets hope preston pulls the trigger right away
ReplyDeleteDid anyone think to ask maybe yadlowski wnated out, as they had released his brother from their protected list, and maybe he did not like how they treated his brother ????
ReplyDeleteof course he wanted out. It's become a right of passage for Hurrican players. One less ginger on the team is always addition by subtraction! Gotta look on the bright side.
ReplyDeleteFreddie,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you thought it was conspicuous when a top-three d-man and veteran like "Yads" wasn't on the team calendar? He had a lot of value for a three-goal scorer, it'll be interesting to read chapter two in this particular trade. Whether you approve or disapprove of the deal, send a letter to the editor (letters@lethbridgeherald.com) because it beats talking politics.
-- Dylan (keep up the debate, folks!)
Have you guys ever thought he was an unpopular player in the dressing room? I thoight Yadlowski always looked selfish. He never shot the puck, he always tried these stupid fake shots and even when he did shoot it was a muffin. He had a very weak shot. Also, ever notice when someone scored, he was the first guy down the bench line? its a little thing, but that stuff gets old as a teammate. Noone likes a selfish teammate.

that was an absolute out to lunch comment "J.R."
