The Lethbridge Hurricanes are closing in on 30 wins this season.
Giorgio Estephan scored twice as the Hurricanes beat the visiting Swift Current Broncos 5-2 Wednesday night at the ENMAX Centre.
The Canes opened the scoring very quickly in this one. Just one minute into the game, Jordy Bellerive put home his 3rd of the season to make it 1-0 Lethbridge. The Broncos did however tie the game a few minutes later when Gustav Olhaver scored on a power play to even things at 1-1. The Canes regain the one goal lead just before the end of the period thanks to Justin Gutierrez, scoring his 19th of the season and it was 2-1 Hurricanes after one.
In the second, the Hurricanes scored the only goal and it came late in the period on the power play. Ryley Lindgren with his 19th of the season giving Lethbridge a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The Canes put this one away in the third. Giorgio Estephan scored his 21st of the season to make it 4-1 Lethbridge. Swift Current did get one more back before the end of the game. Arther Miller scored to cut the lead in half to 4-2, but Estephan sealed the game for the Hurricanes with his second of the game and 22nd of the year and the Hurricanes went on for a 5-2 victory.
The win improves the Hurricanes overall record to 28-12 on the season, keeping them tied with Red Deer for first place in the conference. The Canes were 1/2 on the power play and Swift Current 1/3. Lethbridge held a slight 35-31 edge in shots on goal.
The Canes have a huge game Friday (Jan. 8) when they take on the Rebels in Red Deer. It's a battle for first place in the East and big points are on the line. The Canes have had success already with a few wins against the Rebels already this season, but this will be the first game between these teams since Red Deer has made some significant trades to bolster their roster in the last week.
The Hurricanes return home Saturday (Jan. 9) to host the Kootenay ICE.

The Rebels are a new team now. It will be a great mid season indicator for the team, but like the recent loss in Calgary, Sutter's team will be looking at this game as the most important game of the season to date and they will not want to lose yet another game to the Lethbridge Hurricanes... at home... with their new Uber-roster. As much as I hate to write it, the Canes will either have to play their absolute best game of the season or have their best netminding performance of the season to win in Red Deer tonight (maybe both).
ReplyDeleteHopefully the Canes can keep it within a few goals. If they beat the Deer again, Sutter will really be scratching his head after all his recent trades.
I'm really looking forward to tonight's game, think it'll be really interesting to see how the trades have impacted Red Deerand how we now stack up, from the Scores and there recent games the Canes might have there Hands Full.

I think this was one of those games that showed how good this group really is. This was definitely one of their poorer played games, and yet they still prevailed. In previous years, they would have found a way to lose, and that would have been that. Now, they are finding ways to win, even when they don't necessarily deserve it. My only real concern for this club this year is their tendency to sink to the level of their competition, instead of holding the pedal to the metal and not letting up. The fact is, this team has enough talent to cash in on their chances, when they get them, even though they don't always play at their best. Let's hope they find that "killer instinct" before the playoffs roll around.
