WHL TRADE: Canes Deal Cooper to Pats

The Lethbridge Hurricanes made a move Tuesday, by sending Forward Taylor Cooper to the Regina Pats for Defenseman Brady Reagan.

The 1997-born, 6’3, 205 pound right handed defenseman is in his second full season with the Pats after being drafted by the hockey club in the 2nd round (31st overall) in 2012. With Regina, he played 61 games with 7 points (1G, 6A), a +7 plus/minus rating to go along with 40 penalty minutes.

“We’re adding a good, young defenseman that’s already had experience playing in the league. At over six feet, he adds size to our backend and this is a good deal for us, not just today, but also in the future” commented Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager and Head Coach, Peter Anholt.

Cooper, was acquired by the Hurricanes in November 2013 as part of the Ryan Pilon trade. Pilon was dealt to the Brandon Wheat Kings for Nick Walters, Cooper and prospect Tanner Browne. The 19-year old native of Sherwood Park has played a total of 167 Western Hockey League games registering 77 points (33G, 44A). During his time with the Hurricanes Cooper put up 42 points (17G, 25A) and added 52 PIM’s in 80 games.

Anholt added trades are a part of the business, but it’s never easy seeing good players go. “Since I’ve been here I’ve appreciated what Taylor has done for our organization both on the ice and out in the community. He has played hard and represented our team with class; we certainly wish him all the best with Regina.”

  1. Bigger and younger, nice trade considering Cooper wasn't strong enough to warrant a 20 year old spot next season. Goaltender is in place, time to build from the back end out.

  2. Some really good moves by Anholt so far. Looking at the immediate future (next year and year after) we have really good goaltending, we now have a top 4 d group in place. We have what will be a decent 2nd line and 3rd line. Now some depth at forward and 2 or 3 dynamic point producers over the next 8-10 months and I think this team will be pretty enjoyable to watch and competitive. Bellerive (or whoever he gets traded for) will fill some of that offensive production. Nice moves, this is pointed in the right direction.... finally.

    1. Have you seen Reagan play? I'm unsure where/how he fits in next year?

    2. Hey LaRon. I don't understand your question..." I'm unsure where/how he fits in next year?"

What do you mean by that? Reagan is now our youngest D-man so I am sure he fits in really good next year. He is also only a few pounds away from being our overall biggest D-man. Sounds like a great fit for next year to me.

    3. To anon at 12:44.

I would think any team that can add "2 or 3 dynamic point producers" would improve by leaps and bounds.

The problem with your theory is that it is difficult to add even 1 dynamic point producer. To add 2 or 3 of those type of players would be a miracle.

Dynamic point producing player do not grow on trees.

  4. LaRon, I saw video of him and all reports say he is big and defensively responsible. Should be a good fit and should help keep the front of the net clear for Skinner.

  5. When top teams stay top teams they fill out rosters based on needs at each and every roster position. The acquisition of a big, tough, physical d man (with 3 years of service) obviously fills one of the glaring needs on this team. The remove of (a nice kid) a soft forward, that at best gives you another 3 months of career service makes this an intelligent move by Anholt.
