Hitmen Hammer Hurricanes 9-2

The Calgary Hitmen opened up the flood gates as they hammered the Lethbridge Hurricanes 9-2 Sunday afternoon at the Saddledome.

This was pretty much over after the first period when the Hitmen jumped ahead 4-0 after 20 minutes.  Travis Sanheim scored twice while his brother Taylor scored once for the Hitmen in the first period. Pavel Karnaukhov also scored for Calgary in the first.

The home team added three more in the second frame to jump ahead 7-0 after two periods of play. Chase Lang scored for the Hitmen, Karnaukhov added his second of the afternoon and Terrell Draude also scored for Calgary to give them a commanding lead heading into the 3rd period.

Lethbridge finally got on the score sheet in the 3rd period when newcomer Zane Jones scored twice, once on a penalty shot to cut the Calgary lead to 7-2. The Hitmen though got both those goals back. Adam Tambellini made it an 8-2 game and Carson Twarynski scored his first-ever WHL goal to seal the deal and the Hitmen would skate away with an easy 9-2 victory. Calgary heavily out shot Lethbridge 45-20. The Hitmen went 1/4 on the power play and Lethbridge 0/5.

The loss drops the Canes record to 0-3 on the season. They've now lost 17 straight regular season games dating back to last season. They Hitmen and Canes play again Wednesday (Oct. 1) at the ENMAX Centre. Game time is 7:00 pm MDT. The Hurricanes will host an improved Kamloops team Friday (Oct. 3) prior to heading on the road to BC.

The Hurricanes will also hold their Annual General Meeting Tuesday night (Sept. 30) at the ENMAX Centre. It should be an interesting meeting given last year's 12 win season and the slow start this year. Only Hurricanes shareholders are allowed to attend the meeting. The 2013-2014 financial statement will be given out at that time. When the Canes held their mid-season AGM in February, the club at that time was $100,000 in the hole on the business side and club stated it had secured a load to cover that off.

I'll be attending the Tuesday meeting and will post a report on the blog and a full coverage on CJOC News as well.

Cheers,
Pat

  1. Looks like we do have a couple of positives we can work off of. Saskatoon is 0-4 and Portland is 0-5. Merkley is the leading scorer and Cole Ully from Kam is right up there as well. Same draft as Merkley and Leth said nah.

  2. And.....Ryan Pilon leads all defensemen in scoring. Merkley (who Preston did not like) has more goals (6) than the entire Hurricanes team (5).
Starting off 0-3 or continuing 0-17, the prospects for the Canes in the next 7 games does not look all that promising.
Unless a person turns a blind eye, things have to drastically change and now. That will not come from the AGM tomorrow night. The same old song and dance routine with a complete lack of transparency will be the theme of the night. Nothing short of a complete rebellion by the shareholders, will leave the same "leadership?" in place. They will give a financial report that will gloss over the fact they had to borrow $750K last spring in order to pay bills. They will show another loss for this year. And they will do their best to sell that the team is young, learning systems, going through culture changes and they have faced early season injuries.
The only thing that could lead to changes (franchise status) would be if the representative of the WHL (rumored to be one at the AGM) reports back to the league that enough is enough.

    It is a colossal mess!

  3. Did anyone else hear of a secret closed door meeting today with Robson and Board. Be interesting to see what comes of it.

  4. If it was a secret closed door meeting, then I would guess nobody heard about it. Mind you it might make sense that Robson was here as it has been rumored that someone from the WHL will be attending the AGM tomorrow.
If Robson did meet with the BOD, I hope he directed them to be completely upfront with the shareholders. Something that has been lacking for quite some time.

  6. If you wouldn't clarifying Tim, are you referring to Robson (Brad) GM of the Hurricanes or Robison (Ron) Commissioner of the WHL?

  7. Goaltending appears to be an early concern for the Canes! 5 fluff balls go unstopped creating a mountain that this team could never climb! 4-0 before the end of the 1st period, the game was over. Neither Robidoux or Skinner are remotely close to being starters in this league! Cannot stop floaters from the blue line? This team needs a starting 19 or 20 year old goalie if they wish to have any chance of winning any games this season? Whats happening with the 20 situation, whats happening with the Erkamps situation, many other teams making strategic roster moves leading into the 10Oct overage deadline. Clearly there is still a ton of work that is required and can still be done to improve the current roster...
