Hurricanes Beat ICE 5-4 in Shoot Out

CRANBROOK, BC. - Reid Duke scored the only goal in the a shoot out as the Lethbridge Hurricanes came back to beat the Kootenay ICE 5-4 Tuesday night in Cranbrook.

A wild and crazy opening period of this hockey game between the Kootenay ICE and Lethbridge Hurricanes.  The two teams combined for 5 goals in the opening 10:04. Kootenay jumped ahead 2-0 early with two goals on their first 4 shots when Luke Phillp and Kyle O'Connor scored. The Hurricanes, seconds later scored their first of the game, when Riley Sheen potted his 8th goal of the season beating ICE goaltender Wyatt Hoflin. That cut the Kootenay lead to 2-1, but literally seconds later Kootenay would regain the two goal lead when Luke Phillp scored his second of the night putting the puck by Corbin Boes to make it 3-1. That was 3 goals on 6 shots for the ICE.  The Canes settled down after that and eventually came back to tie the game before the end of the period. At the 10:04 mark, Kolten Olynek scored his 2nd of the season to make it 3-2 lead in favour of the ICE and then a couple of minutes later on a power play, Reid Duke wired a shot, scoring his 8th goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3. That's the way the period would end. The Hurricanes held a 14-12 edge in shots on goal.

In the second, the goal scoring fest came to an abrupt halt. The game remained tied at 3-3 until late in the period when Tim Bozon ripped a shot off the crossbar and in giving Kootenay a 4-3 lead. That would be the only offence in the period. The Canes hit one goal post in the period, while the ICE two. Kootenay would take that one goal lead into the dressing room through 40 minutes of play. They also held a 22-20 edge in shots.

In the third, the Hurricanes would press hard for the equalizer and with just under 10 minutes to go in the period, they'd find the tying goal. Giorgio Estephan, right off a face-off scored his 6th goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4. That ended up sending this one into sudden death overtime. The extra period solved nothing, so we'd go to a shoot out to decide winner. Through three rounds, the only players to score was Reid Duke, the last player to shoot and the Hurricanes would skate away with a 5-4 victory. The win improves the Canes record to 6-27-2-3 in 38 games this season. Lethbridge went 1/1 on the power play and Kootenay 0/5. The Hurricanes also out shot the ICE 37-35.

Merry Christmas!

On behalf of myself and Colour Analyst Fred Jack, thank you for reading this blog and listening to our radio broadcasts of Hurricanes hockey throughout the years. Your support is greatly appreciated. We wish you all the best for a safe, happy, and healthy Christmas season and all the best in 2014!

Next Up

The Hurricanes get a much-needed 10 day break for the Christmas holidays. The Canes will come back and resume practising on Boxing Day as the post-Christmas schedule gets underway for this team on December 27th and 28th (Fri & Sat) with a home-and-away series with rival Medicine Hat. This will be the first time these two Highway 3 rivals hook up since opening weekend of the season when the Tigers swept both games. In total, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat play 8 times a season so they'll see each a fair bit in the second half of the season. Game time on the 27th in 7:00 pm MST. The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. What I liked about this game was seeing that the future of this team came through. Duke, Olynek and Estephan all scored. Good on the team for not throwing in the towel in anticipation of going home for Christmas. It also makes it better heading home on a winning note, especially for this team.

As a die-hard and loyal fan, thanks boys for the early Christmas present and all the best to each of you and your families.

  4. 1934 in attendance? I get that it was against the Canes, and it was a Tuesday night just a week before Christmas,.... but it looked more like 234 in the stands. I would estimate 20 empty seats for every one with a butt in it... How are they not in serious financial difficulty?

Way to hang in there in this one despite a couple early Kootenay goals on very few shots!
    Derko: +3 awesome!
Sheen & Estephan: Looked great! Nice goals!
Ramsay: Hockey gods still are toying with him for some reason. Hands must be swollen from pounding all the opponents jaws?
Duke: Goal in regulation & heor in shootout for game winner! AWESOME! (& made up for his -3 defensive night)

Congrats Pat, players, & coaches! Very happy for all of you.

THANKS for all your hard work and dedication!

I was at every home game, but for some reason, the only game I remember is 6-0 Canes over Rebels.

Safe travel and have a great Christmas everybody!

  5. It is great for the team to head into the break with a win, Congrats boys and have a great Christmas season, Merry Christmas!!!

The team has made some progress since the last trade that brought Cooper/Walters to Lethbridge, they sure seem to play they crap out of #3, he has to be playing 30+ mins a game, to much. Our biggest problem is the overall size of this team, we are a small team by WHL standards and it really shows up when we play some of the bigger teams i.e. Oilkings, Hitmen type teams. Hopefully we can make a couple of moves at or before the deadline to maybe improve the size of a couple of forwards and maybe a Dman? With the euro Dman coming after Christmas that will likely mean that one of the current Dmen will become expendable in a trade and one would have to assume that Lethbridge will be in the "sellers" category this year? Hopefully the GM can make a few moves that will address the size issue for the last half of this season???

  6. everyone is talking about our size, yet when i watch the games from my seat, i notice that we are hitting and taking the body and playing a physical game. we have not had an injury due to someone bigger hitting us or do i feel that we are intimiated by the player that are 6'3" or bigger. I would take Wong over any of them. I think that the team that we have now will imporove in the second half of the season. it is too bad we had a bad start this half cause i do think that we could have made the playoff and played the spoiler by knocking off some of the better teams. it is nice to see the team play for the majority of the game, have not seen that in a long time. Merry Christmas everyone

  7. Just watching the World Juniors Finland vs USA replay. It is absolutely awesome to watch a game where the officials are barely noticeable, and not always trying to be the stars of the hockey game.

Unlike the WHL where the idiot refs frequently yell, "Move... Move... Move...." when the players are fighting for the puck in the corner... the international refs are silent.... as they should be!!

I just saw an official just call a hooking penalty, then unlike the WHL where their brain and eyes don't work while their arm is up.... the same ref called a second hooking penalty on the delayed call. The players in the WHL would have to pull a gun out of their equipment and shoot somebody in order to draw a second penalty on a delayed call.

If ONLY the WHL officials were actually QUALIFIED to do the job and they weren't all trying to be celebrities.

But other than this little mini-tirade, keep trying to learn how to NOT SUCK quite so bad in 2014, and please learn how to call an "Instigator" penalty.... MERRY CHRISTMAS WHL officials!
