Wheat Kings Down Hurricanes 6-2 in Matinee

LETHBRIDGE - Jayce Hawryluk and Richard Nejezchleb each scored twice as the Brandon Wheat Kings handed the Lethbridge Hurricanes their 6th straight loss with a 6-2 victory at the ENMAX Centre Sunday afternoon.

A lengthy delay to start this hockey game. Just 19 seconds into the period, Carter Folk laid a big along the board, shattering a piece of glass in the penalty box. After that was cleaned up, the Wheat Kings struck first on their first shot of the game. Riley Hawryluk stepped right out of the penalty box and burst to beat Corbin Boes to make it 1-0 Brandon. A few minutes later, the Hurricanes would get the equalizer when Brady Ramsay fired a one-timer past Jordan Papirny to tie the game at 1-1. That was Ramsay's 5th goal of the season. That didn't last long as the Wheaties would regain the one goal lead. Just 17 seconds after the tying goal, Richard Nejezchleb put the visitors back in front. That made 2-1 Wheat Kings and that's the way things would end after 20 minutes. The Hurricanes appeared to have tied the game on a power play, but a quick whistle by the referee had the goal called back and Brandon would take the one goal into the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Lethbridge held an edge in shots 10-9.

In the second, Brandon would increase its lead. Richard Nejezchleb moved in on a 3-on-2 rush and snapped a shot by his former teammate Corbin Boes to give the Wheaties a 3-1 lead.  The Wheaties would keep the offence coming against the struggling Canes. A shot by Jayce Hawryluk would be stopped by Boes, but Hawryluk would get his own rebound and cashed it in to give Brandon a 4-1 lead. The Canes though would cut that lead in half when Tyler Wong scored with just two second remaining in the period. That was his team-leading 8th goal of the season. Brandon held a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes of play. The shots favoured the Wheat Kings 22-20.

In the third, the Hurricanes would come out strong to try and get back into the game. Jordan Papirny came up with several key stops for Brandon to keep his team in the lead and that would be huge for the visitors. The Wheat Kings would add two more before the end of the game. John Quennville scored for the Wheaties and then Jayce Hawryluk would get the hatrick and his 4th point of the afternoon to give the Wheat Kings a 6-3 victory. Both teams were 0/4 with the power play in this one. The Canes are now a quarter way through this WHL campaign. They sit with a record of 2-13-1-2 on the season, which is last place in the Western Hockey League. They've given up a league-high 91 goals against in 17 games this season and have score a league-low 43 goals for.

Hurricanes This Week

Our weekly Hurricanes radio show is back on the air Monday night for our first program of November. The Media Roundtable is back in studio for the first time since just prior to the season starting. Needless to say there is plenty to discuss as this hockey club continues to find it's way. Dylan Purcell from the Lethbridge Herald and Paul Kingsmith from Global TV will join myself and Fred Jack inside the CJOC studio. The program starts at 7:00 MST. One note for next week though. There will be no Hurricanes This Week next Monday, November 11th as the Canes will play an early afternoon game that day on the road in Brandon. After this Monday, the next radio show is set for November 18th.

Next Up

The Hurricanes will close out this 8 game homestand this week with three games in four nights. On Wednesday (Nov. 6) the Canes will play host the Regina Pats for the first time this season. It'll be the first of 4 meetings between the two teams. The Hurricanes will then host another very tough U.S. Division opponent on Friday (Nov. 8) when the Spokane Chiefs roll into town. On Saturday (Nov. 9), the Canes will finish off the homestand with a date against the visiting Red Deer Rebels. Lethbridge and Red Deer are playing for the first time this year and will meet a total of 6 times over the next few months.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Glad Ramsay got a star, he deserved one. Painful to watch some of the players who are putting in little effort- Players who should be game changers are contributing NOTHING. There is no way Duke can say he skated his hardest even ONE time tonight (or most nights). That being said, great effort from Wong and Ramsay, glad Wong bounced back after an off game last night, would be curious to see him and sheen on a line together. At least there were shots tonight so that was encouraging- small victories.

  2. The third period looked good for the boys tonight. All the lines were working hard and took a good part of the play to the Wheaties. I wonder why? Was it a result of Drake benching Blomquist for the third period and this his negative affect on his line mates was negated?
I hate piling on one player but he is brutal at best and a complete liability on the ice. Quite frankly they should release him outright because he has no trade value and he could then go back to Sweden and spend his $600,000. Boes is another disaster. That fifth goal was a back breaker as the kids were coming on. What a complete lack of concentration. I bet McCrimmon is laughing on the inside over that deal.

    1. I don't know how accurate these are, and I am pretty sure you are kidding about the $600K, but just to continue the conversation... I thought that all entry level contracts were the same, but I have since learned it depends on age of signing, among other factors. I checked on three other entry level contracts (Curtis Lazar, J.C. Lipon, Adam Lowry), and they were all unique.

I think that all Axel actually gets is $50K/yr (his annual signing bonus) UNLESS he is actually playing in either the AHL or NHL. Anyone interpret this schedule differently, or know otherwise? Any insight, Pat?

    2. You are right about the signing bonus and for sure he will get paid his $600K entry level contract which do vary depending on draft pick placement and round. Since he was a free agent (invitee) his entry level contract would be significantly lower than players who were drafted.
I was being a tiny bit sarcastic with the take the $600k and go home remark.
