Hurricanes End 10 Game Skid: 5-3 Win in Moose Jaw

MOOSE JAW, SK. - Axel Blomqvist scored three times as the Lethbridge Hurricanes came back to beat Moose Jaw 5-3 Tuesday night, ending a long 10 game losing skid.

After kind of a luck-luster first few minutes, the Moose Jaw Warriors would draw first blood in this game with a power play goal. Just 15 seconds into the man advantage, Travis Brown's point shot would be tipped by Jack Rodewald and that would make it 1-0 Warriors. A few minutes later the Hurricanes would even the score on a power play of their own, when Axel Blomqvist tipped the puck by Moose Jaw's Justin Paulic for his 6th of the season. That tied the game at 1-1. The Warriors though would jump ahead again, on yet another power play marker, this time off the stick of Josh Uhrich who beat Chris Tai to give Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead, but before the end of the period, Lethbridge would tie the score again, thanks to Axel Blomqvist who would get his second of the night and 7th of the season to even things up at 2-2 after 20 minutes. The shots favoured Moose Jaw 14-8.

In the second, the Warriors would regain the one goal lead for a third time, when Jesse Forsberg came in from the point and put the bouncing puck by Tai to give the home team a 3-2 lead. The score stayed that way till late in the period would the Hurricanes would score a pair of goal just 29 seconds. Axel Blomqvist would complete the hatrick when he notches his 3rd goal of the hockey game and 8th of the season overall to tie the game up at 3-3 and then right after that, the Canes would take the lead for the first time when Russ Maxwell cashed in his 5th of the season to give Lethbridge a 4-3 lead after two period of play. The Warriors held a 29-17 edge in shots.

In the third, the Hurricanes would do a great job holding the Warriors off the score board. The Canes would add to their lead right off a face-off when Jamal Watson scored his 7th goal of the year to give Lethbridge a 5-3 lead. Moose Jaw pulled their goalie with over two minutes to go down by a pair, but goaltender Chris Tai would come up big and the Canes would skate away with a huge 5-3 victory. The win ends a 10 game losing skid for this hockey team. The Hurricanes improve to 3-17-1-2 on the season. Lethbridge went 1/2 on the power play and Moose Jaw was 2/5. The Warriors out shot the Canes 39-24. Chris Tai earned the game's first star with his performance between the pipes. Axel Blomqvist was the second star with the hatrick.

GM Robson Talk Potential Trades

Hurricanes General Manager Brad Robson joined me on the second intermission Tuesday night to talk about potential trades for this club. "Well, I've spoken to 18 or 19 teams. My main priority was to get a goalie who could come in here and battle with Boes and Tai and now we have Tegan Sacher with the hockey club. In regards to other trades, we are down to six defencemen so I'm looking for an older D-man. There is lots of discussion when it comes to Ryan Pilon, but my main priority now is to get a defenceman........whether it's a separate trade on its own or a deal that involves Pilon. I'm getting offers of older players, younger players, picks, so it's a mix variety. We have a hole to fill on the backend. I'm working my cellphone like crazy, but really I'm in no rush to get something done. I'll make a deal when it's the right time and helps the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the future."

Next Up

The Hurricanes return home now for a pair of games.  The Canes play host to the Red Deer Rebels Saturday night (Nov. 16)  for the second time in a week. The Rebels held on to win 4-3 last Saturday at the ENMAX Centre. The Canes will then have a few days off before hosting the final U.S. Division opponent next Wednesday (Nov. 20) when the Everett Silvertips make their bi-annual trip to Lethbridge. Game time for nights is 7:00 pm MST. The pre-game shows on CJOC at 6:30.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. HO-----LY--- Cow, Look who’s trickin’ now!

There won't be 52 posts on this one, but I will definitely take the opportunity to say CONGRATULATIONS to the Cane PLAYERS!

So THAT’S what the Jets saw in Axel. WELL… DONE! I will be bringing a BLUE and YELLOW cap to salute and toast his success. If he is in the starting lineup, the hat will be on the ice before puck drop.

Don’t get me wrong, Axel was still coasting for the most part, avoiding the corners, avoiding any and all physical play entirely, while relying on his linemates to do all the work, however, the SWEEDE FINNISHED for a change! If he is not going to work then his contribution is that he better finish… and he did.

He deserved a lot of criticism, and tonight he deserves some praise.

Tai earned the win, and very much deserves another start very soon!!

We continue our trend; we WIN every game we score 5 goals.

No corners have been turned, but at least the signal light is on…. Which is more than I can say about all but about six drivers from Lethbridge.

  2. I am very happy for the team, particularly Chris Tai for getting the opportunity to show what he can do and Axel Blomqvist for finally showing us a bit of what the Jets saw. To the rest of the team, congratulations on sticking together and not giving up!

Now before a bunch of you reply to remind me that this is only one game and only the third of twenty three games played, don't bother as I am well aware. But for tonight I choose to simply enjoy the win and celebrate this W for the players.

  4. Grit, size, experience and toughness added to the back end. A much needed piece to our roster. Good job Brad.

Happy the boys got the win.
Not sure how the goalie situation will play out or what is best for this team?
    Long Run.

  5. Outshot in every period....again. And here we are with three goalies... again.

Are we ACTUALLY going to witness the Hurricanes GM ship Tai OUT after he has just earned the team a full one third of their wins in only his 4th start of the season???

Tai played like a WHL veteran in this game, not a guy that has 12 starts vs about 83 games of pine with our team in two years. I believe that he deserves more from this organization than that! We certainly owe him more than we owe to Corbin Boes.

He could have filled his shorts in the first period; he didn't. He could have filled them again getting outshot 12-5 in the third, and he would have been completely entitled to the dump, given the complete lack of confidence both sets of coaches have shown him these past two seasons. He didn't. He competed. He smelled success, not excrement.

Tai gave no GIFTS for Moose Jaw. No "Spin the Goalie" or "flipping flounder" crease theatrics, just solid "keep it between the posts" play.

Tai and the new guy for the rest of the year. It may take a while to move him, but make it known to all 21 that Boes is available. Maybe a contender will have a goalie go down. Tai learned what he needed to work on from Ty Rimmer. ANY player that is eligible to play next season, and/or any draft pick is worth more to this organization than the presence of Boes.

    Richie.

  6. As nice and warm as it was today in Lethbridge, I bet it was a LOT hotter in Portland tonight,... just ask Sam and Jaimen.

Sometimes what one wants is not what one needs.
What one expects is rarely what one deserves.
Often what one deserves is yet to be earned.

Great trade for Tyler Bell tonight.

Another Future star (Chase Phelps) shuns Lethbridge. Would could blame him, really?

  7. Ok they won! Axel scores three! Good, but he needs to perform at least offensively to make up for his poor defensive play on a more consistent basis.
    Good on Tai. More starts?
Bad news as the Canes loose top prospect Chase Phelps to Boston University. I wonder how much affect the Canes poor record, the departure of Sam and Jamien and the quitting by Pilon had on his decision as it looked like he was going to be here in February.

  8. Pat, could you ask the GM what went wrong with the recruitment of Chase Phelps or is it just going to be ignored like it never existed? Hirachi

    1. Hirachi,
It may not be a case of what went wrong, but more of a better opportunity at Boston U. Afterall it was public knowledge that he had turned down offers from Minnesota and Michigan. But my gut feeling is that what has been going on with the team on and off the ice, certainly could have had an adverse affect on his coming here.
I doubt that the Canes GM would actually come out and say he changed his mind because of what has gone on. More like he would say, "Chase had an offer from Boston U that he could not turn down."
