Royals Rally to Beat Hurricanes 4-3

VICTORIA, BC - Logan Nelson scored with 1:17 to go in the 3rd period to break a 3-3 tie as the Victoria Royals beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-3 Saturday night.

The Victoria Royals started off quickly in this hockey game. Less than two minutes into the contest, Ben Walker took a feed from his brother Jack and buried a slapper by Corbin Boes to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead.  A few minutes later the Hurricanes would finally find a way to beat Patrik Polivka in the Victoria goal. Ryan Pilon skated off the bench, picked up the puck and snapped it by Polivka to tie the game at 1-1. It was Pilon's 1st goal of the season. Corbin Boes was a busy guy in the Lethbridge goal as the Canes were heavily out shot 17-4 in the opening 20 minutes of play to keep the score even at 1-1.

In the second, the Hurricanes would grab the lead for the first time. Tyler Wong, on the power play would notch his 3rd of the season. That made it 2-1 Lethbridge. The score stayed that way until the Royals found the back of the net to even the score at 2-2 when Keegan Kanzig got a goal for the home team. The Royals kept coming hard at the Hurricanes, but Corbin Boes was outstanding in goal for Lethbridge. The shots after the second period favoured Victoria 38-13.

In the third, the Hurricanes took back a one goal lead when Sam McKechnie scored his first of the season to give Lethbridge a 3-2 lead midway through the period. The Royals got back to even terms on a power play with just over 5 minutes remaining in the period when Joe Hicketts blasted a point shot which beat Boes to tie the game at 3-3. It looked as if overtime would be coming, but with just over a minute left, Logan Nelson banked a shot off the Lethbridge goaltender and in and that would be the difference as Victoria would rally to beat the Hurricanes 4-3. Boes was very good between the pipes as the Hurricanes were heavily out shot 49-28. Lethbridge went 1/4 on the power play. Victoria was 1\5. The loss was the Canes 5th in a row and drops their overall record to 1-7-0-1 on the season. A tough loss for the Hurricanes who had a one goal lead twice in this game.

The Hurricanes had all healthy scratches for the second straight game. This time (G) Jonny Hogue, (D) Bryton Sayers, (D) Joel Topping, (F) Axel Blomqvist, and (F) Spencer Meyer watched from the press box.

No Hurricanes This Week

Because of the Thanksgiving matinee game for the Hurricanes, there will be no Hurricanes This Week radio program this week. There will also be no show next Monday either, (Oct. 21) as CJOC will be broadcasting LIVE local civic election coverage that evening. Our next hockey program will air at 7:00 pm on October 28th.

Next Up

The Hurricanes will travel back east now as they get set for a game against the Blazers in Kamloops.  Like the Canes, Kamloops has had a slow start to the season. Both teams have similar records heading into this game. The Blazers have dropped 4 straight while the Canes are trying to put the breaks to a 5 game skid.  Something will give Monday afternoon. Game time is 3:00 pm MDT. The pre-game show on CJOC at 2:30.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Pushed around again. The team is too small at both ends of the ice. There has been no Identity developed yet other than hoping the goalie stands on his head. Giving up 40-50 shots per game so many times is a recipe for disaster.
I hope the Canes can make some changes to get some size so they can move bodies in front of their own net and establish a forecheck in the offensive zone.

    1. It's the useless "system" that's dictating these voids and has negated the speed and skill of our forwards. They are criticized and punished if they try to use the considerable talents that they have. Learn to live with this tragedy until the coach figures it out. Trading these smaller skilled players for larger (and undoubtedly less skilled) players tethered in place by an unworkable system will not help. But would probably bring a lot of joy back into the lives of the traded players.

He was hired to develop players and create a winning team. Instead he's developed a system, handcuffed his players and created a losing team.

    2. The hardest part about this comment is we went through 4 non playoff seasons to build through the draft. We gave up numerous vets over the past 4 seasons to obtain picks to build our roster. Brad was responsible for the scouting and drafting of this roster. Brad is responsible for hiring this staff.
Can this system work with the players we have?
If not what is needed to make this system work?
Does Brad trade the vets and tell the fans we are getting bigger and younger to protect this young rookie staff? Or does he hold the staff accountable?
Do we trade Duke to allow him to display his talent for his draft year and obtain a large stud Dman?
Are we starting this rebuild all over to suit this staff? Yet we have no proof their system will work.
Why did we not hire a staff that was suited to the roster we have?
Brad has control of this team and I hope he makes the correct decisions.

Yakubowski is on pace for a total of 8 points as a 19 year old. He had 32 Goals last season. I am being told the vets have bad habits? I will take bad habits if it gets me 32 goals a season. If it gets me more than a 0.167 winning % for dead last in the W.
I would be a lot less concerned and patient but it’s been 4 straight non playoff seasons.

  2. Going into the second game of a back to back, why would the coaches healthy scratch two defensemen to leave the team with only 5? Discipline is important but this team cannot afford to have more losses based on principle. That was a disservice to the rest of the team. I am sure Boes really enjoyed the view of 49 shots.
