LETHBRIDGE - Tyler Wong scored a hatrick as the Lethbridge Hurricanes beat the visiting Saskatoon Blades 8-5 Saturday night at the ENMAX Centre.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a strong start in this hockey game. Wearing their new 3rd jerseys, the Canes hit the score sheet on the power play. Tyler Wong tipped a Griffin Foulk point shot which beat Saskatoon goalie Troy Trombley to give the Canes a 1-0 lead. That was Wong's 4th of the season. A few minutes later, the Hurricanes would go up by a pair, when Russ Maxwell found the back of the nest for his 3rd goal of the year. That gave Lethbridge a 2-0 lead. Before the end the period, the Hurricanes would get another on the power play, when Macoy Erkamps blasted home his 2nd of the season. The made it 3-0 Canes after 20 minutes of play. Saskatoon held a slight edge in shots 13-10.
In the second, the Blades would start things off with a goaltending change as Alex Moody would replace Troy Trombley between the pipes. The Hurricanes though blew the game wide open with four more goals. Ryan Pilon fired a point shot which beat Moody to make it 4-0 Lethbridge. They kept it coming with another power play goal, this time Captain Josh Derko would score his 3rd of the season to give the Canes a 5-0 advantage. Derko made it 6-0 with his second of the game and 4th of the year just a few minutes later. That gave the home team a big lead and they weren't done there either. Before the buzzer sounded, Tyler Wong potted his 2nd of the evening and 5th of the season to give Lethbridge a commanding 7-0 lead. Saskatoon would break the shut out bid for Corbin Boes with 2.5 second left in the period when Nick Gomerich scored to cut the Canes lead to 7-1 after 40 minutes of play. The shots favoured Saskatoon 25-24.
In the third, the Blades would chip their way back and make things very interesting after the Canes got into some penalty trouble. Saskatoon scored four power play goals. Graham Craig scored at the 6:50 mark to cut the Canes lead to 7-2. Shortly after that, Nikita Scherbak scored with the man advantage to make it a 7-3 lead in favour of the Hurricanes. Under three minutes later, another power play goal, this time by Brett Stovin. That cut the Canes lead to 7-4. Then Nikita Scherbak scored his second of the night on yet another Saskatoon power play to make it a 7-5 game. The Blades pulled the goaltender, but Brady Ramsay was able to find Tyler Wong and he would score into an empty net to give the Canes am 8-5 victory. The win is the Canes first on home home ice this season and improves their record to 2-9-0-1 on the season. Lethbridge went 3/5 on the power play, while Saskatoon was 4/6. The Canes gave up a lot of shots against in this one as Saskatoon out shot Lethbridge 44-33 on the night.
Next Up
The Hurricanes hit the road for one game Sunday as they travel up Highway 2 to take on the Calgary Hitmen at the Saddledome. This will be the Hurricanes first visit to Calgary this season and the second meeting of the year between the two clubs. Following that game, the Hurricanes return home for 8 straight games starting with a visit from the defending WHL champion Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday (Oct. 22). The Canes game in Calgary is set for a 4:00 pm MDT start. The pre-game show on CJOC at 3:30.

Consistent lines with the player looking like they were on a mission.
I love the pickup of Foulk who looked like he was relaxed and excited to be on the ice. Made some mistakes and just moved on from them. Good pick up Brad.
For me this home stand will determine what we do with Sam and Yak. Another Foulk type player (18-19 yr old dman) and a big character 18-19 yr old defensive forward would be the other. IMO teams will not undervalue Sam and Yak.
I think we have enough scoring potential with Wong, Russ, Duke, Axel and Watson. Gio and Kolten should develop throughout the season to insert some points on the back lines.
I truly think we have enough skilled forwards and we are only lacking a couple kids with some serious grit and toughness.
I hope this was the turning point for the team to truly become a Team (win or lose)

Congrats the the boys. I couldn't go but listened to the last bit (scary) and watched the highlights this morning. Wong, Maxwell and Foulk looked great. Wannabe Oldtimer
ReplyDeleteScary good was how well the Canes played in the first two periods. Nice to see the player rise above the adversity play hard and fast hockey. There were a number of stars in this game. It was probably the best game that I have seen Maxwell play in a couple of years. He was a super pest and skated miles last night great job Russ. As well as Russ played others stepped their games as well Derko, Ramsay, Foulds, and Hackman as well as a number of others who I did not mention. Hackman was his usual steady self very few mistakes kept the Blades forwards to the outside. Have to mention Wonger he played a tremendous game and was rewarded for his hard work. The shorthanded goal that he scored from Maxwell has to be one of the best of the year.
ReplyDeleteThe coaches have to be mentioned as well. They did a masterful job keeping the adversity surrounding the last week to a minimum. It was nice to see when the players came back to benches one of the coaches was there to give a pat on the back and words in the players ear. As a result we had an inspired team.
Listening to after game show I was impressed with Ramsay's comments they were mature and team first. Wong mentioned one of the keys to the win was playing the "System" and when they stayed in the system they had success.
The game was exciting and fun to watch! Those that stayed at home missed a very entertaining game.

The first 2 periods were fantastic (best in along time). Shows that this team can compete when they decide to skate every shift. Possible the best game Russ has played since he was 16.Lets keep it going in Calgary today boys. KAOS
ReplyDeleteThe team played very well, particularly in the first two periods. As mentioned, they played with virtually the same lines all night and were rewarded with it. They just need to build on this now. By the way, the fans were great last night as they supported the Hurricanes big time when they needed it.

So Pat tweeted Robson says at least 15 teams have contacted him about Yakabowski and Sam M....goes to show the rest of the league knows more about these two than Canes coaches....sad....LthHnds
ReplyDeleteUmmm, take another look at the quote. 15 offers from teams ROBSON has spoken with. Not all of those teams called him. And let's face it, I'd give you a fifth-rounder for either one of those, doesn't make it a complimentary offer as far as how those players are valued.
