Day One - Camp Scrimmages

The players attending training camp were put through the ringer Thursday as the four teams went through a number of drills that gave the coaching staff their first look at the current roster players, prospects and camp invites. According to Head Coach Drake Berehowsky’s twitter account Friday morning, he commented “yesterday was the easy day.”

It’s a new era and a new way of thinking and Friday, fans got their first chance to see what Berehowsky and his coaching staff (Brad Lukowich, Mike Craig and Jeff Battah) have in store for the upcoming season. Each scrimmage started off with more drills and then it was game on.

Team Green ‘A’ vs. Team White ‘B’ – FINAL SCORE:  2-1 Team Green
It was a quick pace to start the day, but it was Team White with the pressure early on. Despite that it was Team Green getting on board first as Barrett Sheen opened up the scoring while Spencer Galbraith added his first assist of the game. Both Sheen and Galbraith would register 2 points each in the game as Team Green wins a close one 2-1.

Team Navy ‘C’ vs. Team Red ‘D’ – FINAL SCORE: 5-2 Team Red
In the second scrimmage of the day, getting physical seemed to be the order of the day – at least to start the 1^st period. The majority of the early pressure came from Team Red but after 30 minutes the teams were tied at a goal apiece. The second 30 as a different story as Team Red opened up the floodgates and went on to a 5-2 win. Six players in the game had 2 points each, but Jaimen Yakubowski had 2 goals in the victory.

Team Green ‘A’  vs. Team Navy  ‘C’ – FINAL SCORE: 9-7 Team Green
To kick off the afternoon scrimmages, Team Green faced Team Navy and this one was a tale of two periods. In the first 30 minutes it was an all out Team Green offensive attack as they were scoring at will, but in the second period, Team Navy was not going down without a fight. They managed to tie the game only to see their unbelievable comeback fall short 9-7 to Team Green who closed out the first day of scrimmages with a perfect 2-0 record.

Plenty of goals, some solid goaltending, getting physical, and giving it all the players had. That summed up the first three scrimmages and the only thing we hadn’t seen yet was a shootout and that’s exactly how Team White and Team Red would end the day as the lone goal came off the stick of Jaimen Yakubowski and Jonny Hogue stopped the shooters he faced to claim their second win of the day.
