Five Hurricanes Prospects at U-17 Selection Camp

Five of the Lethbridge Hurricanes draft prospects are among 80 players from across the province who are in Calgary this weekend for the 2013 Team Alberta Under 17 Selection Camp which gets underway Friday (May 10).

The five draft picks are all showcasing their talents in the hopes of earning a spot on the U17 team after camp wraps up on Sunday.

The Hurricanes named to the Spring Camp roster are:

  • F – Giorgio Estephan – 2012, 1st round pick (4th overall)
  • F – Josh Hayward – 2012, 7th round pick (138th overall)
  • F – Tyler Rohl – 2012, 9th round pick (182nd overall)
  • D – Kade Jensen – 2012, 5th round pick (103rd overall)
  • G – Eric Szudor – 2012, 6th round pick (121st overall)

Last year, the Hurricanes had six players invited to the Selection Camp including Reid Duke, Tyler Wong, Jonny Hogue and Reid Nemeth.

Team Alberta U17 is the final stage of the Team Alberta Male Program which gives athlete’s exposure to International Competition and opens the door for a chance to participate in Hockey Canada’s National Programs. The World U17 Hockey Challenge is the pinnacle event for an athlete in the provincial Team Alberta Program and is the first state of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence which in turn leads to the National Team Canada U18 and U20 Programs.

  1. These 5 players are just another example of the wealth of talent that the Canes have coming up. With the right coach, and a bit of luck, the Hurricanes should contend next year and for years to come.

  2. I didn't get a chance to see any of the games with Gio (I think he played 1 home game?), so I'm looking forward to seeing him in the lineup next year at centre. There was quite a buzz about him from what I remember.

  3. Memorial Cup begins Friday. I wonder how the Blades will do with 51 days off. They should be healthy, but certainly likely not game ready. Three very good teams to beat.
Portland wins the WHL championship again and looking at the previous winners: since the Hurricanes joined the league in the 86-87 season, 9 of the current teams have not won the WHL title; Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Prince George, Seattle, T-City, Everett and Victoria. On the other hand Kamloops and Med Hat have the WHL championship 4 times each.

    Portland the favorite?

  4. I am confused about Spencer returning to the Canes. Not sure if he wants back to get another year of University and we want more competition for 20 yr olds. I would have liked him on our team this year if we could depend on him to remain for the full season. Keep Derko for size and grit up front, Boes better be a lock, Ramsay or Spencer for the last spot? Sofillas out? A trade brewing?
