Hurricanes Wrap Up Draft With 9 Picks

The Lethbridge Hurricanes made 9 selections and acquired a veteran goalie in a trade at Thursday's 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Canes traded their first round pick, 6th overall to Brandon for veteran goalie Corbin Boes. I spoke after it was all over with Hurricanes GM Brad Robson after it was all said and done.

  1. The Bantam draft is always a crapshoot (Jay Merkley ring a bell) but it seems Clague is as sure fire a bet as they come. Goalies in the Bantam draft are not just a crap shoot, they are a long shot at best.

While he will never ever admit it, if Robson knew Clague was still there at #6, he does not make this deal without getting more from Brandon. Robson all along has said and I quote “the top 4 players in this draft are locked up tight and there will be no movement there etc.” He did not say which 4 players those were but the overwhelming consensus was, in no particular order; Benson, Steel, Clague and Patrick. After those top 4 there was a bit of a drop off, so Robson assumed at #6 we would get a really good player, but not a great player. With that reasoning this trade makes a bit more sense. I think if he knew Clague was there for the taking at #6, this deal does not get made unless we get quite a bit more from the Wheaties!

Robson said the deal was done yesterday. Another thought I have is was it not possible to make a tentative deal that sees this trade go down only after the Canes see who is available at #6. I am sure that was part of the discussion, but Kelly M (being the master trader he seems to be) probably said yesterday to Robson, take it or leave now or no deal. If you don’t think scenarios like this occur, you have never been in a real horse trade.

Let’s hope Boes has a stellar year, the Canes finish about mid pack in the East in 2013-14 and Skinner turns out to be an All-star goaltender. If so, then it really does not matter how good Clague is.

  2. Apparently, the Canes GM doesn't have much faith in Christopher Tai. Otherwise, trading for a veteran 'tender wouldn't have been necessary.

  3. Robson said a month ago that he would be looking for a 19 or 20 year old goalie... so no surprise here. The Canes have MORE than enough prospects at forward and defense.

As Caldwell pointed out, the Canes added two #1 goalies today, one for this year and one for the future. Robson could have chosen Skinner at 6th but he still got him at 17th as well as picking up a #1 goalie.

Boes is very good, his save % was just below .900, but that's very respectable given the weak team that played in front of him. The year before, his save % was 4th in the WHL just above Bartosek (RD)and Brossoit (EDM).

The Wheat Kings seem to always have problems with developing their goalies... remember that Ty Rimmer was in their organization for three years and look how he turned out as a 19-20 year old!!

  4. Just a friendly reminder going forward. With posts on the blog. No anonymous posts are going to be allowed. Please use a handle of some sort from this point on so people are able to respond to a name as opposed to just anonymous.

I'll give it a bit of a grace period as a reminder for a few days.

    Thanks! :)

  5. One move by the Canes that seemed to sneak under the radar scope was their trading of 3 very late round picks to Saskatoon for futures. Of course it is no secret that the Blades "sold the farm" so to speak in order to add strength for their Memorial Cup hosting team. Could the "futures" for the Hurricanes be one of
the Blades overage defensemen (next season)? Here is a list of the six d-men possibilities; Duncan Siemens (not likely 1st rnd pick-COL),Dalton Thrower (not likely 2nd rnd pick-MTL)which leaves Matthew Pufal 6-2 198 6g-37a; Kyle Schmidt 6ft, 197 1g-6a; Graeme Craig 6-5 215 1g-15a 78pim and maybe Darren Dietz 6-1 205 24g 34a 100pim. Robson has stated in the media that he would like to add some experience on the blue line. So, maybe just maybe those "futures" could be a d-man from Saskatoon.

  6. Yes that looks like the idea as the Blades will have oodles of players to pick from

  7. Drafting Skinner isn't going to solve the problem in net for the next 3 years as it will take him 3 years to be ready for WHL. Let's hope Boes continues the string of quality overage goalies coming to the Bridge. (But I can't help but think Tai isn't overly happy about the lack of confidence he's been shown).

Great new look to the blog Pat!!

  8. Poke Check,
You might be right on that note regarding Tai. But considering the few games he played, he really can't expect to take a huge role. I would expect that the coaching staff (whomever that will be) will play him more than last season. However, once again there is a huge amount of pressure on everyone concerned with the club to be in the playoff picture and not just slipping into 7th or 8th, which could limit Tai's starts.

  9. Pat, Commenters: Is it true that the Canes have dropped Johnny Hogue?

    1. JRock,

      Nothing I've heard at all.

    2. @JRock...I have not heard what the Canes have done with their 50 player protected list. At this time of year (after the bantam draft etc) most teams make adjustments to their lists. From what I know, the Canes pared their list down to 40 players before the draft to enable them to add this years 2013 bantam picks. Unfortunately most WHL teams treat the 50 player list as though it contains the Presidential nuclear launch codes. There is little to no publicity when teams adjust their list, as usually it means some, or many players are let go. That is not something the teams want to broadcast to the world as it is pretty darn negative for the kids they "dump".
As for the Hogue situation I have no inside knowledge. I suspect maybe he went to the Canes and asked what his future holds with them after all of the goalie juggling Lethbridge did at draft. It seems pretty obvious that he is very low on the Canes goalie totem pole. If I were in his skates I would probably say release me from your list and therefor let me become a free agent.

  10. I received a text from GM Brad Robson. He says Hogue is still with the team. "He has a bright future with us". Hopefully that clears up any misinformation.

  11. Well Im hoping Brad changes the focus on this team , they lost a lot of players who got disheartned with Rick

  12. Fred you may be right with your comment about players being disheartened with Rich. But with the promise of a new direction which includes the hiring of a new young coach who is a teacher, who has systems, who is a disciplinarian, and a good communicator; those "lost" players may be chomping at the bit to get back, knowing fully what this team could accomplish with the right people in place. I think we are all aware of some of the skill, talent and work ethic on this team and with a coaching staff and management bringing them the development they have clearly been lacking over the last 4 years.

  13. Injuries happen and competition is needed. Unless we draft a goalie in the Euro draft we need to keep Hogue, Tai and the 4 over-agers until the season starts. I don’t think we should pass on a Euro goalie if one meets the grade (or is drafted in NHL and wants CHL experience). I would love to see two quality goalies split time this season and our starter be on the roster for next season. Skinner likely won’t take over as # 1 until his second season (at the earliest).
