Lethbridge Hurricanes 2011 draft pick Kolten Olynek and the Saskatoon Contacts
are headed back to the 2013 TELUS Cup.
Olynek and his teammates return to Canada’s Midget-AAA
Championship after shutting out the Thunder Bay Kings 3-0 on Sunday to win the
Western Regionals for the second straight year.
The Contacts dropped the opener of the tournament 4-3 to the
Kings on Thursday before running the table to claim the title. Friday, the
Contacts won 3-1 over host Kenora and followed that up with a 4-1 win over
Winnipeg on Saturday. Olynek wrapped up the tournament with 4 points (2G, 2A) in
the 4 games played and now Saskatoon will be looking to improve on last year’s
Bronze Medal when the puck drops on the TELUS Cup later this
month.
The Contacts last won the national championship in 2005 and
if they can win it all again this year, it will mark the third straight year a
Lethbridge Hurricanes prospect has won the tournament. Last year, Joel
Topping won it all with Red Deer, and in 2011 it was Adam Henry with
the Winnipeg Thrashers.
The 2013 TELUS Cup also features the Red Deer Optimist
Chiefs, Sault North Stars, Ottawa Jr. 67’s and Valley Wildcats. The only berth
left to be decided is in Quebec. The tournament takes place in Sault Ste. Marie,
ON from April 22nd – 28th.
