Broncos Battle Back to Beat Hurricanes 3-2 in Shoot Out

LETHBRIDGE - Adam Lowry scored twice in the third period as the Swift Current Broncos came back to beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 in a shoot out Saturday night.

A good start for the Hurricanes on home ice in this hockey game.  Nearly 5 minutes into the first period, the Hurricanes power play would strike.  Dan Johnston's point shot went off Broncos' defenceman Dalton Reum and past goalie Landon Bow to give the Canes 1-0 lead.  That was Johnston's 8th goal of the season.  Lethbridge had a few more quality scoring chances after that, but that would be all the offence either team could come up with in the opening 20 minutes. The Hurricanes held a slight edge in shots 12-9.

In the second, not much of anything to be honest.  Both teams had some good scoring opportunities. Landon Bow was the busier of the two goaltenders as the Canes pounded 15 shots his way.  Neither team was able to score and the Hurricanes lone goal scored back in the first period would hold up to this point to be the only scoring in the game.  Lethbridge out shot Swift Current 27-21 through 40 minutes of play.

In the third, the Swift Current Broncos would even the score on the man advantage. Adan Lowry unleashed a bullet which beat Rimmer high on the glove side to tied the game at 1-1, four minutes into the period.  Late in the game, the Broncos would take the lead for the first time, when Adam Lowry scored his second of the night, tipping a point shot by Rimmer to make it 2-1 Swift Current.  23 second later, Lethbridge would tie the game. Sam McKechnie lifted a shot over Bows, for his 19th goal of the season and just like that the game was tied again, this time 2-2.  That would force things into overtime.  The extra frame solved nothing so the Canes and Broncos went to a shoot out to decide a winner in this game.

In the shoot out, Adam Lowry and Graham Black would score the only goals as the Broncos came back to defeat the Hurricanes 3-2.  The Broncos really had a strong 3rd period and in the end out shot Lethbridge 41-36 in this game.  The Hurricanes went 1/5 on the power play while Swift Current finished the night 1/4.  The shoot out loss drops the Hurricanes to 19-18-1-5 on the season.  The Canes earn a point despite the loss and that gives them 44 on the season, one better than Saskatoon.  It moves the Hurricanes into 5th place in the Eastern Conference.

On the CJOC post game show, Assistant Coach Chris Chisamore said he needs to work more with Rimmer regarding the shoot out.  The Canes are 1 and 5 in six shoot out games this season.

PILON & DUKE RETURN

Hurricanes defenceman Ryan Pilon and forward Reid Duke will be back in the line-up Sunday for the Hurricanes.  Both players are returning after playing the last few weeks at the U-17's in Quebec.  Pilon, the Captain of Team West had 2 assists in 4 games, while Reid Duke had 2 goals and 2 assists for Team Pacific.  Canes prospect Kolten Olynek had a great tournament as well, scoring 2 goals and adding one assist for Team West.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes will host the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors Sunday night (Jan. 6).  This will be the 4th and final meeting of the season between these two teams, with Lethbridge holding the edge 2 games to one.  Game time is 6:00 pm MST.  The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30.  The Hurricanes will host Vancouver Wednesday (Jan. 9) before heading on the road for 5 straight games.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Lacklustre performance tonight overall despite generating some decent pressure and a fair number of shots. I think this game was easily Topping's best in a month or so. The Canes really need the Merkley line to regain its early season form to start stringing some W's together. The same could be said about Maxwell. I guess try just need to follow Johnston's lead. He was a beast again tonight and is clearly the team's MVP into eyes.

  2. And yet another game with the Canes underachieving. The question is why? In the last few games, the opposition hasn't played that well...lacklustre performance by the home team.....disappointing.

  3. Lets try MISSING the logo on our shots on net once in a while??

Power(less)-play strikes again! What a momentum KILLER! The players need to try to work on some plays on their own because this coaching staff has NO CLUE how to get it done. Axel has GOT to be better in every zone; he is getting less and less effective, every game.

  4. Glad to see Wong stepping up and getting some recognition, he's been great the last few games.

  5. That was another lost opportunity last night. Some players need to do some soul searching. Merkely, Watson and Yakubowski have been invisible since the break and dont have 1 point since the break between them! Totally unacceptable. Rimmer has been average...another over the shoulder goal with no screen last night and a point shot in the middle of the net and he is not in position...what can you say about shootouts except horrible. Tai I hope gets a start tonight. With Pilon and Duke back maybe a regular game forward should sit in the stands and get some perspective...this team cannot win with guys taking nights off. It was a wasted important point last night. Scott

  6. Here we go again. Team is stuck in mediocrity.Preston? Looks oh so familiar to previous years when the team only progresses so far. There is no development happening here. Preston? Power play again with no scheme at all.Last 5 games the team is 3 for 27 which is 11%. Preston?

  7. Last night was a game the Canes should have won and blew. I agree with some previous comments about to many passengers on the Cane Train right now. Having said that in the 5 games since the break 3 have been against league leading Calgary and Edmonton and 2 against Swift Current. They picked up 5 of possible 10 points and 2 road wins. Consitency is their biggest enemy right now and they must beat teams like Moose Jaw and Vancouver coming up to make a playoff run. TD
