Regina Pats Beat Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2

LETHBRIDGE - Morgan Klimchuk broke a 2-2 tie with 32 seconds left in teh 3rd period as the Regina Pats defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 Tuesday night.

No scoring in the first period of this hockey game.  Both teams had a few chances, but goalie Ty Rimmer and Teagan Sacher managed to keep the doors close and the game scoreless after 20 minutes.  Shots were even at 10-10.

In the second, the Hurricanes would break the 0-0 tie when Jaimen Yakubowski scored his team-leading 21st goal of the season to make it 1-0 Lethbridge.  The Pats through would storm back in a pair of goals less than two minutes apart.  Regina would tie the game on a quick power play goal by Kyle Burroughs.  That made it 1-1.  Then shortly after that, the Pats would take the lead for the first time.  Jack Rodewald took the puck off the side boards and lifted a hard shot over Rimmer to give the Pats a 2-1 lead.  That one goal lead held right through the end of the period. Regina held a 20-16 edge in shots.

In the third, the Hurricanes would put on a huge push and with just under 5 minutes to go, Craig Leverton would take a feed out front and fire a shot beating Sacher to tie the game at 2-2.  That was Leverton's 7th of the season and put the Canes back to even terms.  It appeared the game was headed to overtime until the Pats would stun the ENMAX Centre crowd when Morgan Klimchuk snapped home a shot beating Ty Rimmer with just 32 seconds remaining in the 3rd period. That made it 3-2 Regina and the Pats would skate away with the victory and the two points.  The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 17-16-1-4 on the season. Lethbridge finished the night 0/3 on the power play and Regina was 1/1. Regina out shot the Hurricanes 27-26.

The Hurricanes have plenty of games on the road after the break.  So far they've played 23 games at home and just 15 away from the ENMAX Centre.  They'll more than make up for that in the final two months of the regular season.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes are off now for their annual WHL Christmas break.  They don't resume play until Friday, December 28th when they travel to Calgary to take on the Hitmen.  This will be the first game of a home-and-away set between the two teams as the Hitmen make the return trip to Lethbridge the following night.  Game time on the 28th is 7:00 pm MST.  The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

On behalf of Fred and I, everyone at 94.1 CJOC and the Lethbridge Hurricanes we wish all the best during this Christmas season and very happy and prosperous 2013!

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Some of the boys definitely looked tired out there tonight. Here's hoping that a week or so off will give all a good rest and heal a few bumps and bruises that have taken it's toll.... There is a long ways to go, much of it on the road, so let's bring home the playoffs for the first time in years.

  2. I didn't see or listen to the game, but 26 shots isn't the type of offensive game I was hoping for a final game before the Xmas break.

Having said that, I hope the boys enjoy the break with their families! Merry Xmas everybody!

  4. Boys looked tired as someone said. As good as veterans played against Kamloops , Ramsey Hood and Rimmer did not look good last night. Johnston was the only vet who had any energy.
Overall a good first half and boys need to get a good rest and get off to a good start after the break. Merry Christmas to the boys and all the Canes staff and fans! Scott

  5. This team continues to play up or down to the level of the opponent. Until the forwards can play every game with constant pressure on the puck they will have these types of games. It was either late in the 1 or early 2 when Sam McK got cut with a skate above his knee ( 15 stitches ). We really struggled after that as they mixed and matched lines especially while Maxwell was in the penalty box. Sam did say it was not serious and will be back after the break. I thought Sofilas did a good job filling in on "d". Hopefully all went well with Adam's stress test today and he will be back in the line up on the 28. Enjoy the break and the time away and come back rested and ready to go for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Happy holidays and safe travels. AJ

  6. Until this team can consistently beat the teams that are below .500 they will not make the playoffs.

  7. As others have said, this team still plays the game that their opponent offers, instead of forcing their will like they did to Kamloops. This is the mark of a young team, and I can only hope that they are learning something with these losses against inferior opponents.

And, for crying out loud, let's give Rimmer some nights off. The past little bit he has looked, and this is being kind, very average. If this team want to make some noise in the post season, he has to be playing at the level he was early in the season.

We also need young Tai to get some ice time, what happens if Rimmer gets hurt?

These guys have shown that they can play at the highest level, they now need to show they can do it consistently.
    Go Canes Go!!

  8. Chuck.......one thing I meant to add on my original comment is that this is a VERY young team. I'm not surprised at all by their lack of consistency. That's just the way it is with young teams. Preston has chosen to stick with his present core and not add any vet support, so it is what it is......a young team learning what it takes to win on a consistent basis.
