Hurricanes Hammer Kootenay ICE 6-1

LETHBRIDGE - Brady Ramsay scored twice and the red hot Jaimen Yakubowski added two points as the Hurricanes hammered the Kootenay ICE 6-1 Saturday night.

The Hurricanes got things started in this hockey game, when Brady Ramsay broke a 9 game goal scoring drought with his 7th of the season to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead.  That goal sent the stuffed animals flying at the ENMAX Centre.  4025 stuffies were collected, over 1000 more than last year! The Cane Train kept rolling after that with a pair of power play goals. Graham Hood made it 2-0 with his 5th of the season and soon after that Jay Merkley nailed home his 14th of the year to give Lethbridge a 3-0 lead.  The Canes would carry that lead into the dressing room after one.  The Hurricanes out shot the ICE 10-3.

In the second, the ICE would get on the board. Luke Philp beat Chris Tai up high on the power play to cut the Hurricanes lead to 3-1.  It was Tai first home start of the season for Lethbridge.  The Canes got that one back when the guy with the hot hand scored again. Jaimen Yakubowski knocked home his 19th goal of the season and his 8th point in 3 games to give Lethbridge a 4-1 lead.  The Hurricanes would make it 5-1 when Brady Ramsay scored his 2nd of the game and 8th of the season and before the period would come to an end, the Hurricanes would score their 3rd straight power play goal of night when Russ Maxwell potted his 18th of the season off a pass from the red hot Jaimen Yakubowski to give the Canes a a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.  That was Yakubowski's 9th point in the last 3 games.  The Hurricanes held the edge in shots 23-15.

In the third, the scoring would come to an end for both teams and the Canes would take the game 6-1. The win improves the Hurricanes record to 16-14-1-4 on the season for 37 points in 35 games.  Lethbridge was very good on the power play going 3 for 4 while the ICE finished the night 1/4.  The Hurricanes out shot Kootenay 34-20. The Three Stars: 1- Brady Ramsay, 2- Jaimen Yakubowski, 3- Graham Hood. Axel Blomqvist played maybe his best game of the season for Lethbridge and was named the hardest working Hurricane in this game.

  1. Good solid effort, with very few mental errors in our own end. Wow what else can you say about YAK ATTACK? 6G + 3A in his last 3 games, could be another Player of the Week winner. I don't know about the rest of you, but this had to be Axel's best game on home ice this season. His set up of YAK's goal was a gem. Nice for Tai to put in a solid performance. He looked very comfortable in nets. Two tough games coming up, Kelowna and Kamloops. Nice to see the team bounce back after last night's mess. You never got the sense that they were in trouble tonight.

  2. Can't win without Harper in the line up, I guess :) Happy for Harry. He made some nice plays; I wish he could have made good on his chance in the slot.

Great sustained effort by the team this time, and great result! It looks like the Kootenay Ice record of consecutive playoff appearances WILL come to an end this year.

It looks like we caught the Tigers one day too early; just our luck! Would have LOVED to hear the inbreds boo their home team tonight.

Kelowna and Kamloops are going to be ridiculously tough compared to both Med Hat and Kootenay... Hope the coaches are preparing the lads accordingly, and that they didn't use up all their goals. - Richie

  3. Ice play with absolutely no 20 yr olds - 3 19 year olds - is it any wonder it was 6 - 1

  4. Great effort by the Canes! A 60 minute effort with all four lines rolling. Even up 6-1 in tge 3rd they didnt let up for a minute. I thought Axel easily had his best game of the year and here is hoping its a sign of things to come. Tai played great and his rebound control was exceptional. My personal favourite moment was probably when Simpson was trying to goad Hood into a fight in the 3rd and Hood planted him on his butt. Keep the train rolling Canes.

  5. Canes played with 2-20's and 2-19's last night which makes them even younger than the league's lowest at 17.4 yrs. Plus the Ice beat PA the previous night. What explains their 6-1 loss is that they were out played!

  6. What a difference a day makes. The whole team looked better. The guys were hitting, back checking and the "D" men never got caught out of position. Harper looked better and was hitting guys, Sutton looked more comfortable on "D". Ax definetly looked better although he still seems as though he needs to grow into himself. Does anyone know if he has had a big growth spirt in the last year? Hood played exactly how he needs to. Tough in your face hockey. These next 2 games will be tough but if this team plays with speed and constant pressure on the puck there is no reason they cannot win against anyone in this league. AJ

  7. What is with the Hurricanes website??

The Tigers (and the WHL site) have already posted video highlights of the 7-0 *#&-kicking they took at HOME last night in their game (that started 1/2 hour AFTER the Canes) which shows an attendance of 4006, yet NOBODY IN THE SEATS..., yet the Hurricanes still haven't posted highlights of their 6-1 WIN against Kootenay that featured a TRUE full house on Teddy-Bear night that ended 20 minutes earlier?

Come on CANES, what is the hold up?

  8. As mentioned by a few others, VERY good bounce-back win irregardless that is was a weak Ice team. I solid effort is a solid effort.

The Canes website is a mess and has paled in comparison to other teams' websites for many years now. I had to send an email to the "Board of Directors" to find the names of the members of the Board. It was answered by the Communications volunteer Dick Gibson who is a member of the Board. Not sure if they have added the board members' names to the website now or not? Doesn't matter, the site is still WEAK!!

Way to bounce back boys! Good win. Let's carry over the 60-minute effort into this week's games!

  9. Darren,
Before you imply to other readers on this blog that a certain board member did not follow through with his reply to your complaint re: board member listings, I would suggest that you check the website (still a work in progress) to see if in fact the listings were there.

  10. The site does need some work. The most obvious example to me as that they don't sell any merch on it. For a team this deep in the red I would think all sources of revenue would be pursued including online merch sales.

One other point, "irregardless" is not a word.

  11. NN....last time I checked this wasn't an English class, but hey if it bothers you, I'll try and type more formally....irregardless of what other people think.

Is there any reason to imply to the others that read this blog, that a certain board member (already named) did not follow through with his response to your complaint? Before making such an implication, I suggest that you do as I have, and check the board listing on the website.

  13. So Regina goes into Saskatoon and takes it on the chin 9-0.

THEN, they return to Regina to host their Teddy-Bear Toss... ONLY to get Shut OUT AGAIN in front of 5250 fans, this time 7-zip. WOW, sucks to be the PATS!! Uh-ohh WHL... Did the Blades just figure something out??

  14. I thought maybe it must have been moved but it is right there where it has always been. I clicked on Team, Board of Directors and there they are, including what committee each one is on.
