The Western Hockey League announced today that Lethbridge Hurricanes’ forward Jaimen Yakubowski is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Yakubowski collected nine points, scoring six goals and three assists to go with a +5 rating, in three games over the past week, helping the Hurricanes to a 2-0-0-1 record in that span.
On Wednesday, September 5, the Hurricanes welcomed the defending WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings to the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge. Yakubowski collected a pair of assists and was named the game’s 2nd Star in the ‘Canes 6-2 victory over the Oil Kings. On Friday, December 7, the Hurricanes hosted their biggest rivals, the Medicine Hat Tigers. Yakubowski scored five goals and was named the game’s 1st Star in the Hurricanes 8-7 shoot-out loss to the Tigers. The next night, Saturday, December 8, the Kootenay Ice were in town to face the ‘Canes. Yakubowski gathered one goal, one assist and was named the game’s 2nd Star in the Hurricanes 6-1 triumph over the Ice.
Yakubowski currently sits 29th among all WHL scorers with 32 points (19 goals, 13 assists) in 35 games played thus far this season. The Hurricanes currently sit 4th in the WHL Central Division with a 16-14-1-4 record for 37 points.
An 18 year old from Dalmeny, SK, Yakubowski is in his second full season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The ‘Canes selected Yakubowski in the 4th round in the 2009 WHL Draft and has since appeared in 103 games gathering 60 points (35 goals, 25 assists) and 189 PIM’s.

Fantastic effort by Yak and a well deserved honor for the 2 week in a row. Does anyone know if any other Hurricane has won on back to back weeks. Adam said they are hoping he will be in the line-up against Calgary December 28. Hope his progress continues and we can see him on the ice before the end of the year. AJ
ReplyDeleteCongrats YAK ATTACK! Player of the Week two in a row! It's been a long time since a Hurricane was named P.o.W. let alone back to back. To bad the WHL does not have such records showing, still trying to find out if the 5 goals in one game is a team record.

Mentioned this before, I didn't see Yaks having this type of season at any point in his WHL career, so good on him for making a believer out of me! Congrats on having a GREAT season!

ReplyDeleteI heard 7 goals in one game is the record for any Lethbridge player, but it might date back to the Broncos Days. I haven't been able to find the stats anywhere myself.
It is less than 7 for a Lethbridge player. Looking at a WHL guide from a just a couple years ago, the WHL record is 7 and it was achieved by 5 players.
ReplyDeleteKimbi Daniels, who scored all 7 for Swift Current in 1990 vs MH to win 7-4,Dennis Holland for Portland in 1988,Mark MacKay for MJ in 1984, Ray Ferraro for Brandon in 1984 and Brian Propp for Brandon 1977
Yak Attack leading the Cane Train! A well deserved honour. Here's hoping that Yak and the rest of the Canes keep it rolling against the Rockets and Blazers this week. I am also curious regarding the Canes individual game record. It's unfortunate that their website only lists season and career records, I would guess that Rimmer's save total in his first game against Edmonton this year may also have been record territory, maybe.
