WHL Pre-Season: Hurricanes Beat Calgary Hitmen 3-2

COLEMAN, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes beat the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 in WHL pre-season action Saturday night in the Crowsnest Pass.

After a scoreless first, Lethbridge scored twice early in the second period on goals by Remi Laurencelle and Jamal Watson. Before the end of the period, the Canes would add another. A great play to spring Brady Ramsay who would make it 3-0 Canes.   The shots favoured the Hitmen 24-21.

In the third, the Hitmen made it interesting with two goals from Elliott Peterson and Jaynen Rissling.  That cut the lead to 3-2.  Calgary came on extremely strong in the final few minutes, but Lethbridge managed to weather the storm and hold on for a 3-2 victory.  Calgary out shot Lethbridge 36-31.  Win the win, the Hurricanes finish the pre-season with a 3-3 record. Ty Rimmer won all three games he started in goal for Lethbridge during the 2012 pre-season.

The Hurricanes starters in this one include: Ty Rimmer in goal, Lenny Hackman and Albin Blomqvist of defence and up front the line of Tyler Wong, Reid Duke, and Jamal Watson.  The scratches for Lethbridge were Tanner Kovacs, Ryan Pilon, Graham Hood, Dan Johnston, and Craig Leverton.

The Hurricanes open the WHL regular season next weekend with a home-and-away series against rival Medicine Hat.  The first game is September 21th at the ENMAX Centre at 7:00 pm (MDT).  The Tigers will host the Canes in their home opener the following night, Saturday (Sept. 22) at 7:30 pm.  Both games will be broadcast LIVE on the radio home on the Hurricanes, 94.1 CJOC for our first two broadcasts of the new season.

  2. So far that seems to the be the trend Richie. It would be nice to see the team play better defence around him, but that may not be possible with the young forward units we have. We shall see.

  3. Preston will still have to deal for a backup goaltender and a forward or two that can bring 20-25goals.

Defense will be ok, despite the fact that MK is coaching them.

    Captain? Johnston or Hood.

  4. Johnston for captain for sure. I've been suggesting they pick up a 19 year old to help on the forward lines as well, but so far nothing. I understand the desire to keep all the young players, but surely we can afford to give up a 2nd Round pick for some experience and size up front, no? Not looking for a superstar, just a good solid experienced player with some size. Otherwise, I'm not sure the playoffs are attainable.
