Hurricanes Camp Wrap: Day Four

The 2012 Lethbridge Hurricanes Training Camp at the ENMAX Centre moved into the next phase with all players being divided into 4 teams.

They faced the same team twice with Team White and Team Blue starting the day. It was a perfect way to start as the Goalies for both teams put on a show from the outset. Tanner Kovacs was in between the pipes for Team Blue while 2011 Bantam pick Jonny Hogue was in goal for Team White. Both netminders made some incredible saves, and in fact they combined for 32 saves in the first period which ended in a scoreless tie. Alexandre Pelletier would take over the goaltending duty for Hogue and he continued to battle like Kovacs with each side only giving up a goal. Overtime would solve nothing and in the end Axel Blomqvist scored the game winner as Team Blue took the opener with a 2-1 win in a shootout.

The second game of the day was a little more open between Team Red and Team Red/White. Christopher Tai and Ryan Ferguson would get the start in goal for the first period and of their 14 shots on goal, the lone marker to beat Ferguson came from Colton Sandboe (Jay Merkley, Phoenix Worth) at the 8:40 mark. The two sides would trade goals as Tyler Wong, Spencer Galbraith and Jay Merkley would all put one in the back of the net. Remi Laurencelle gave Team Red/White a 3 goal cushion with under 4 minutes to play but Jaimen Yakubowski added a late goal as this one ended 4-2 in favor of Team Red/White.

Team Blue and Team White met for the second time in the third scrimmage of the day and this game would be vastly different from the first. This game would not be a low scoring affair, there would be no scoreless period, no overtime and no shootout to decide a winner. Instead there was plenty of offense and stellar play from the vets and rookies. Tanner Kovacs stopped all 11 of the shots he faced while two of last year’s Bantam picks connected on the opening goal of the game. Just 1:42 in Carter Amson drew the lone assist on a goal from Colby Chartier. That goal would stand until the final three minutes of the period when Craig Leverton (Brady Ramsay) would make it a 2-0 game. Team Blue would find their scoring touch in the second period as Axel Blomqvist would score a pair, Ryan Pilon scored a highlight reel goal, Russ Maxwell added a pair of assists and Ryley Rimmer also added a goal and an assist in a 5-3 win for Team Blue.

The final game featured Team Red taking on Team Red/White and another close one would wrap up day four. Jay Merkley had a goal and an assist while 3 of this year’s Bantam picks (Logan Fauber, Cole Plotnikoff and Thomas Lenchyshyn) all figured in on the scoring.
