Lethbridge Hosting Alberta Cup This Week

For the second straight year, Lethbridge is home to the Alberta Cup with four straight days of hockey starting Thursday morning at Nicholas Sheran Arena. The Alberta Cup is the premier event in the province giving Coaches and Scouts another chance to identify players ahead of the Western Hockey League’s Bantam Draft May 3rd in Calgary.

The Alberta Cup program starts with more than one thousand players trying out in their respective zone camps and for the 160 that make their team, it’s also their next step as they compete for an invite to the U16 Provincial Camp. Among the Lethbridge and area players on the South roster this year: Logan Boulet, Chase Bell, Michael Grant and Devin Ruff all of Lethbridge, Carson Beers of Taber and Mitchell Torrens and Ryan Stronski of Claresholm.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes coaches and scouts will once again be keeping a close watch on the players. Last year, participants in the four-day tournament included Jonny Hogue, Reid Duke, Tyler Wong, Reid Nemeth and Roman Melzer who were all drafted by the ‘Canes last year. Other graduates of the Alberta Cup include former Lethbridge Hurricanes Zach Boychuk and Chris Phillips along with Devin Setoguchi, Kyle Brodziak, Dany Heatley, Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, and Jordan Eberle just to name a few.

  1. Jay Merkleys brother will be playing for Calgary South and is expected to be a high draft pick in the upcoming Bantam draft. Would the Canes think about taking him or any other players from Alberta? All of the top Bantam players in Alberta will be playing and it will be the last chance for Preston and Robson to make thier final descisions for the Bantam draft.

  2. Most of the top draft picks (first 5-8 are expected to come from BC this year.
That is according to a few WHL scouts.
