Brody Sutter Heading to AHL's Checkers

Lethbridge Hurricanes Captain Brody Sutter is getting his shot at the playoffs this time in the American Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers. The 2011 7th round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes celebrated an exciting 6-5 shootout win in Medicine Hat Saturday night to cap off his Western Hockey League career with the Canes and Tuesday, he’ll board a flight headed for the AHL.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and a new experience. It should be fun and I hope to help them make the playoffs as well learn a lot from them” said Sutter Sunday afternoon as he arrived for the teams exit interviews with the coaching staff. The Charlotte Checkers currently sit in 7th place in the AHL’s Western Conference with 72 points and he’ll join former Lethbridge Hurricane Zach Boychuk and his cousin Brett Sutter.

Sutter was named the 21st Captain in Lethbridge Hurricanes history after the WHL’s January 10th trade deadline when his teammate Cam Braes was dealt to the Moose Jaw Warriors. Sutter finished his 20-year old season with career highs in Goals (30), Assists (30) Points (60) and Penalty minutes (49) in 65 games, while in his 4 years in a Hurricanes uniform, he played 213 games, with 57 goals, 66 assists and 123 points.

  1. Let me be one of the first to congratulate #19 on getting a shot in the AHL! After a couple of rough starts, bring constantly roasted on this blog, he had risen above it all. After the Braes deal and despite wanting to be dealt, Brody took over this team as their captain and scoring leader. Great that he reached the 30 goal plateau! He benefits from having Boychuk and his cousin in the Hurricanes organization. Way to go Brody!

  4. Brody is an amazing player, captain, and person. First class all the way. I have to give Rich Preston credit for recognizing the character in Brody in leading a team that was very young to a very respectable second half of the season. Brody is mature beyond his years and I'm sure will only get better and better as he has shown with his time a hurricane. Good luck in the Pros Brody. Great to see you are still a Cane!!!

  5. Good Luck Brody.. now lets get down to business Rich , you promised the Canes would make the playoffs you said it at the start, you failed to deliver, it is time to fire your self and bring in a new coach, as well as a good asst, coach that has played defense and understands defensive roles.
The canes organization cannot keep saying well with all our prospects we will be better next year.

They need a new modern coach , the board should be convincing Rich it is time to concentrate on GM duties.

  7. Just saw the news on the Hurricane web site!! Congrats to Brody! He did nothing but improve year after year and looks like he will continue to improve as he moves to the next level in his career. I guess this shows all the doubters that they are not as smart as they think they are when some questioned whether he should even be on the team! Way to go Brody, good on you for beleiving in yourself and never giving up. That determination is the reason your moving on to the pros. Good luck on a long and successful career! Mike

  8. Congratulations to Sutter. Certainly a well deserved accomplishment for a very great player on and off the ice. He certainly is a great example of what hard work and determination can do for you.

At anonymous 1:10 – great to see you feel like you have a handle on the type of player Sutter is. He led the team in goals and points this year and you still think he isn’t a good player and is over rated? His progression and improvements through his WHL career certainly show what type of player he is and the dedication he has on and off the ice.

All the best to Sutter in his future. I am sure he will continue to prove his worst critics wrong.

  9. Congrats to Sutter! Hopefully all of the haters will figure out that "floaters" and other players that don't deserve to play professional hockey don't just randomly get called up by professional teams. Clearly Brody deserves this opportunity! He has consistently improved each season he has played in the WHL and to score 30 goals on a team with a losing record is no accomplishment that should be taken lightly. Anyone who still doesn't understand why Brody will succeed as a professional hockey player should give the kid a break! He is obviously doing something right! If you can't see that, you don't understand hockey and should not be trying to judge talent.

  10. Brody already is a real Pro. He asked for a trade to a contender at the trade deadline but was kept to lead a very young team despite little or no chance of making the playoffs. These kids followed his lead and finished the season with respectability. I for one appreciate his talent and even more so his ability to lead. Brody has had pressure to live up to since his arrival and I for one think he has more than prooven himself as a player and a person. I will look forward to watching Brody in the not to distant future playing in the NHL.

  12. I'll say one thing (to maybe "split the difference" with the haters and lovers of Sutter.......he has definitely improved his game since last season. I wasn't overly impressed with his game last season. It seemed like his skill hadn't caught up to his lanky size. But he definitely improved and is keeping his NHL dream alive.

  13. I guess I was one of the haters everyone is talking about. He did show alittle more of the Sutter grit in the last few months. I still don't think he is good enough to play in the nhl, but who knows what will happen especially if he can get quicker and stronger he may make it. Good luck to you Brody and whatever your future brings. AJ
