Brody Sutter Named New Hurricanes Captain

The Lethbridge Hurricanes were proud to announce this afternoon that veteran forward Brody Sutter has been named the 21st Captain in Lethbridge Hurricanes history. Sutter follows former Captain Cam Braes who was dealt to Moose Jaw just before the trade deadline earlier this week.

Sutter currently leads the team in points (36) goals (17) and assists (19) and for the first time this year he was named an Alternate Captain with the team. Sutter began his WHL career in 2008-2009 as a member of the Saskatoon Blades, but a nerve injury in his shoulder, cost him several games at the start of the season. That year, Sutter came to Lethbridge near the WHL trade deadline in exchange for a 5th round pick in the Bantam Draft and played 30 games for the Canes registering 7 points. The following year, Sutter played all 72 games with 14 points. He followed that up with his best season with 42 points (18G, 24A) in 46 games and he’s set to break that mark easily this season. The Calgarian has already surpassed two milestones this season – 200 WHL games played (December 27th vs. the Kootenay Ice) and 100 points for his WHL career (January 6th vs. Medicine Hat)

The 20-year old is the tenth player of the famed Sutter family to make his way through the WHL, and was considered a diamond-in-the-rough by Saskatoon when he was listed by the Blades in 2007. Brody is the son of former Lethbridge Bronco and NHL journeyman Duane Sutter and wears the number 19, the same number his father wore while playing junior hockey in Lethbridge.

I spoke with Brody Sutter after the Hurricanes practiced today in Prince George to get his feelings on being named the Captain:

  1. I am happy for Brodie. He deserves the honour.

This will not make all of the contributors to this blog happy, but as long as the team is happy that is what matters.

Good choice now let's start the captaincy off with a win in PG.

    Go Canes

  4. I am one of the fans that was disappointed with Brody’s comments. I am not disappointed of his captaincy and hope he takes his role seriously. Brody should be thankful for the opportunity that he was given to develop and get drafted. The Hurricanes are showing their thanks to Brody by giving him the C. This experience should be a great benefit to Brody’s career. I would think his future NHL team wants to see how he performs as our captain. Good luck the rest of the year.

  6. Do you honestly think Sutter will play in the nhl. Watch him play on defense. We have had way better players here that have never played in the nhl. At least he is only here for the rest of this year

  7. Anon 1:18 - You're right, at least he is only here for the rest of the year, then he will be on to bigger and better things like professional hockey (something I suspect you have NO experience with!) Way to go Sutter, you deserve this! Best of luck throughout the rest of this season and your career, I am sure all of your hard work, dedication and excellent play will be rewarded in the future.

  8. Pretty sure we will all agree that Boychuk was a way better player than Sutter and look at the trouble Zach is having making it into the nhl. Or even Colten Sceviour, Dwight King

  9. In Jr hockey, yes, those guys were better players, but success and moving to the next level all depends on the situation a player is put in and when they develop into the player they are predicted to be. Sutter is a late bloomer, maybe those guys peaked in Jr and weren't able to succeed at the next level. You'll see, Sutter will succeed at the next level, it is only a matter of time.

  10. If Brody is a late bloomer and does produce at the next level then good for him. I just can't see it.
