Broncos Double Up Hurricanes 6-3

SWIFT CURRENT, SK. - Three quick goals in a span of 2:44 in the third period broke a 3-3 tie and lead the Broncos to a 6-3 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night.

The Hurricanes got off to a quick start in Swifty. Just over two minutes in, Landon Oslanski wired a point shot past a screened Jon Groenheyde. That gave Lethbridge an early 1-0 lead. After that though, the Broncos hot power play took over in the last half of the period. Former Hurricane Ryon Moser took a pass on a 2-on-1 rush, beating Tanner Kovacs to tie the game at 1-1. Not too long after that, the Broncos would take the lead, this time a wrist shot from Graham Black beat Kovacs on the glove side to put Swift Current ahead 2-1. Before the end of the period, the Broncos would make good on yet another power play. Adam Lowry tapped home the puck at the side of the Lethbridge goal to give the home team a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. The Broncos out shot Lethbridge 12-11 in the first period.

In the second, the Hurricanes would cut the lead to 3-2 when Brady Ramsey got in on the action. Ramsey tapped home the puck in a scramble out front of the Broncos goal for his 3rd of the season and that cut the lead to 3-2. That's the way the period would end. Swift Current out shot the Canes 23-18 through two periods of play.

In the third, the Canes would find the equalizer on the man advantage. Graham Hood banked a shot off the goalie from behind the Swift Current net for his first of season. That tied the game at 3-3. With just 7 minutes left in the period, the Broncos would regain their one lead. Coda Gordon pass went off Russ Maxwell's leg and behind Kovacs to give Swift Current a 4-3 lead. Less than a minute later, the Broncos would get another. Again it was Coda Gorden tipping a shot in front of the Canes goal to give the Swift Current a 5-3 lead. Not too long after that, the Broncos would get their 6th of the night. Dalton Reum hammered a shot low along the ice by Kovacs and that would pretty much do it, as the Hurricanes found themselves trailing 6-3 with just a few minutes left to go. The Broncos ended up scoring three goals in a2:44 to blow the game wide open. That is the way the game would end. The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 2-4-0-1 in 7 games this season. The Broncos out shot Lethbridge 32-24 on the night. The Canes went 1 for 3 on the power play and Swift Current finished the game 2 for 5.

Rookie goaltender Tanner Kovacs started his first-ever WHL game against the Broncos. Reid Jackson and Brod were late scratches for the Hurricanes in Swift Current. They were replaced b Adam Henry and Tyler Kizuik. The Canes played with 7 defencemen.

  1. Just watched the game on the internet....Canes played decent for 52 minutes but a major collapse in the last 8 min...coverage was blown in front of the net of 4th and 5th goals and Kovacs will wish he had the sixth one back....the season is going to get away from them if they dont tighten up defensively and find some more goal scoring. Injuries are hurting and Canes dont seem to be to forthcoming on those...Sutter, Merkley, Jackson, Moline on top of Fyten and Sofillas is a lot of injuries. Important week coming up on and off the ice with rosters being finalized...maybe some big changes?? TD

  2. The team needs more shots than 6 in the third period. Could be a long season. Power play needs work still. Defense needs to tighten up as well.

Hopefully they put up a better show on Tuesday

  3. I wasn't expecting a playoff spot for this particular team. My expectations were lower than that. However, previous bloggers are right when they say it could be a long year if they don't get some of their injured players back soon. Not having Sutter and Merkley is going to hurt their depth up front. Their defence? Well, their defence isn't good and I didn't expect it to be good. They don't have a high bantam pick on the back end (save for Erkhamps), so I knew they were a weak bunch.
