Hurricanes Drop 3-2 Pre-Season Decision to Tigers

LETHBRIDGE - The Lethbridge Hurricanes are still winless in pre-season play after falling 3-2 to the Medicine Hat Tigers Wednesday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Newly acquired goalie Damien Ketlo saw his first action in a Canes jersey and he had a busy night as the Tigers outshot Lethbridge 38-29 in this game.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the second period on a late first period goal by Sheen. The Hurricanes tied things up in the second frame on goal by defenceman Tyler Kizuik. Things would stay deadlocked at 1-1 moving into the third period. In the final period, Medicine Hat would get two quick goals less than a minute apart from Petryk and Dieno. That gave the visitors a 3-1 lead. Seconds later, Cam Braes moved in and scored, getting Lethbridge back to within one, but that's as close as the Canes would get in this game. Medicine Hat would skate away with a 3-2 victory. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 0-4 in exhibition action.

It would a pretty good game overall. Both teams had several power play chances, 9 opportunities each with the man advantage. The Tigers went 1 for 9 and Lethbridge 0 for 9. That turned out to be the difference in the end.

The Canes will close out the pre-season this weekend with a couple of game in Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass. Friday they play Kootenay and Saturday the Canes take on Calgary.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Thought it was a good effort from the Canes...young kids Pilon and Duke looked good. Veterans Braes, Johnston looked solid and new goalie was excellent....defence was physical which was good to see. Need a little more size and grit up front. Entertaining game. Looking forward to the season! TD

  2. I remember reading a Hurricane coach quote somewhere (maybe this blog) that said that defender Albin Blomqvist "played mean." I immediately thought, "ya, mean, compared to other Swedes like the Sedins, Sundin, Naslund, sure, maybe." ... This kid is definitely mean by Canadian standards too!

We saw several 'pussies' cower and disregard the puck entirely when they saw #4 coming; it was awesome. One shift, Albin destroyed 3 Tigers within 20 seconds while defending behind the goal line. The only Tiger willing to 'stand up' against him decided to cross-check him from behind as Albin was returning to his bench from centre ice.

If he continues this type of play, he will not only be the fans choice favorite Hurricane and the most feared player in the WHL, he may soon (2-3 years) find himself as the groomed replacement for Captain Crunch (Scott Stevens) in the NHL. WOW! I can hardly wait to see if he can throw a hip check like former Cane Mitch Versteeg - WARM UP THE VIDEOTRON!! Richie.

  3. I thought the forwards did the best they could. Only 2 of the 12 were 18-20 yrs. Lots of speed and hustle!
