Hurricanes Acquire Local Max Moline From Tri-City

Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager and Head Coach Rich Preston announced today that the Canes have acquired forward Max Moline from the Tri City Americans in exchange for a conditional 5th round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

Moline, a 93-born, 6’4” 195 pound forward and is a Lethbridge local who joins the Hurricanes with 54 WHL games under his belt. In lieu of this trade, Lethbridge will still retain a fifth round pick as well as a trio of picks in the sixth round – their own, Seattle and Regina’s.

Moline is expected to join the club this weekend as the Canes will take part in a pair of games against the Kootenay Ice (September 16th) and the Hitmen (September 17th) in the Crowsnest Pass as part of the annual “Thunder in the Pass” preseason tournament in support of Crowsnest Minor Hockey.

  1. Huh. Interesting trade..... Why aren't we trading our 19 year old defenseman for younger defenseman. Better do it before the season starts before the end when we get nothing for the 20 year olds.

  2. Don't be too hasty, Preston will be dealing at least one, maybe two of his older d-men in order to get the youngsters into the lineup.

  3. I thought that I knew what Preston was after by going after this 6'4" local, but Moline doesn't play very tough, and he doesn't fight often or well, so I don't see how he will offer much/any protection for our young and diminutive forwards??? - Richie.

  4. @ 4:06pm... We don't need any more younger defensemen... There are already 10 on the roster plus Pilon who will likely play the max # of games a '15 yr old' can play. There are already 4 very good D-men from the 15-17 age group. The 2-3 that don't make the final roster will either be the 16 yr olds sent down to Midget and/or an outright release of a couple of the 19 year olds, since they likely have no trade value.

  5. How does Richie know so much about Moline? Lots of trips to Kennewick? Get real, you never saw the kid TWO YEARS AGO when he played here, so leave the made-up analysis to the experts.

  6. Numbers kind of speak for themselves...53 games 0 goals 4 points and -8 on one of the best teams offensively and defensivley in the WHL last year...if he wasn't from Lethbridge would we have given him a second look? Tarnasky had 4 pts and including 3 goals and was tough with good speed...should have re acquired him it doesnt look like he is on the Giants Roster

  7. This seems like an odd trade. I trust Mr. Preston has a plan in place, do not know what it is. I will be interested to see how this plays out before the end of the preseason.

That is what I was referring to.By moving a couple of so-so vets, that makes room for some of the very good young d-men in the lineup.

  9. @10:51pm,

Zero trips to Kennewick. My comments were based on consideration of his team, his games, points, and PIM Stats, and YouTube. What is your problem? Take a look yourself. Thanks for your advice, though! - Richie.

  10. To the first two "Anonymous" authors....Preston isn't trading his 19 year old defencemen because the young Hurricane defencemen are definitely NOT ready for a 72-game grind in the WHL. We need the 19 year old defencemen. I don't know how you two think they are when you haven't seen them play against other WHL opposition. You're basing this arguement on meaningless preseason games when the opposition is also playing their 16-17 year olds. I didn't see any young Hurricane defencemen who looked ready for the long WHL grind. NONE.

Also, in regards to your statement that we better trade the 19 year old defencemen before the season starts .......you don't make a trade like that until you are either desperate or realize you aren't making the playoffs. The best time to trade your older players is at the trade deadline when other teams are looking to pay a high price for experience on the blueline.

  11. To all of you cowards who want to shout down "Richie"....at least he attaches a handle or name to his comments. That's more than I can say for most on this blog.
