Coach Preston Fined & Suspended

The WHL has handed Hurricanes Head Coach and G.M. Rich Preston and $750 dollar fine and a one game suspension for his rather calm, but yet angry outburst at the officials in a 5-3 loss in Kelowna this past weekend.

Preston tossed water bottles, a clipboard, and Gatorade container onto the ice in frustration with the officials after a goal was called back late in the 3rd period. A linesman told the referees he had seen a spear by Canes' forward Graham Hood on the previous play. That negated the goal and gave the Rockets a power play, on which they scored.

Preston will serve his one game suspension Wednesday when the Hurricanes host the Moose Jaw Warriors at the ENMAX Centre. Game time is 7:00 (MST). The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30. He'll be back behind the bench Friday in Calgary.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. I certainly hope that RP got a chance to let the league know what he thought about Klein's call. Hopefully the league also had spoke to Klein about his officiating, because he is a joke. If anyone saw the Kelowna YouTube video after RP was thrown out of the game where did Klein go. He went an spoke to the Rockets goalie. The goalie was laughing during the conversation you could not see Klein's face. But that was most certainly unprofessional of Klein to go and speak to a Kelowna player after the incident. Preception is everything.

  3. so anonoy 4:26. tell us more facts about the team since you must be in the dressing room and coaches office, for that can be the only way you would know the team is undisciplined cause of him. The Kelowna coach and radio guy agree with Prestion but you with all your experiance know better eh? maybe the Hurricanes are trying move to Victoria to get away from Lethbridge fans just like the Broncos moved out. enjoy it while you can fans cause with fans like you that town doesnt deserve a WHL or any other team

  4. What a joke. Klein acts like a fool everytime he refs a game and he never gets suspended or fined! Good Job Rich, glad you stick up for your team against that clown of a ref!!

  6. I have been Prestons biggest critic but good on him. Let's get a collection plate together tonight. $1/fan should get it done and donate the rest to charity.

  7. I heard RP's interview on the Hurricane report on CJOC on Monday night and I was somewhat disappointed to hear RP say that he wants to return to a 1-referee system. His reasoning is because there are too many penalties called and it disrupts the flow of the game.

The fact that there were too many penalties being UNCALLED and the hooking and holding was what was ACTUALLY distrupting the game is the EXACT reason the 2-referee system was brought in Rich. C'mon, we're not going to go backwards into the 1970's when their was SO much holding and hooking it looked like the players were skating in molasses are we?? I watch some old games for the nostalgia of them, certainly not for the speed!

  8. The problem with the Refs is they now think everyone is coming to watch them. The Linesmen get into the act by throwing too many players out of the faceoffs. The Refs want to out do each other by calling penalties. The Refs should not be the game. The best game is where everyone leaves the rink not knowin who the refs were or talking about them. (Said on this Blog earlier by another and very insightful.)

  9. I agree with 4:26's numbers. Preston NORMALLY would have got a much larger fine and a 3-5 game suspension. But luckily for the Canes, I think the League realized what a terrible officated job was done that night and gave out a fair penalty to Preston.
