Hurricanes "Officially" Bidding for Memorial Cup

Lethbridge City Council is teaming up with the Hurricanes in the hopes of finally landing a Memorial Cup.

Today, members of City Council gave the Canes' Board of Directors "support in principal" to make a bid for the 2013 national major junior hockey tournament. Board President Brian McNaughton told CJOC News today that the soon-to-be newly renovated ENMAX Centre could play a huge roll in landing the tournament. He says it would be an excellent opportunity to showcase the ENMAX improvements and bring huge economic spin-offs to Lethbridge and area.

McNaughton stated in a news release by the organization that, "The presentation of this letter is an important step in what will be a long and competitive process for us as an organizing committee and a hockey club."

The Board will be back before City Council at some point next year where they will ask for financial support to the tune of $1,000,000.

Six years ago Lethbridge lost out to Kelowna to host the Memorial Cup at that time.

I'll have more on the Canes' Memorial Cup bid as the process moves forward, including comment from the WHL and more from the organization when the time comes.

Thanks,
Pat
