Canes' To Ask City Council To Support Memorial Cup Bid

It appears the wheels are well in motion for the Lethbridge Hurricanes when it comes to a potential bid to host the 2013 Memorial Cup.

According to the latest Lethbridge City Council agenda, which was released to the media on Thursday, the Hurricanes are scheduled to make a presentation to Council on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 3) to ask for the City's support to put in a bid.

I spoke with CJOC News Reporter Bryan Jeannotte, who covers City Hall for our radio station. He tells me that the Canes' Board of Directors believes there would be several benefits to bringing the national event to Lethbridge, including economic spin-offs and a chance to showcase the soon-to-be newly renovated ENMAX Centre.

A second presentation is expected to be made to Lethbridge City Council by the Hurricanes next year as well, according to the agenda and at that time a request is expected to be made to have the City and the Canes' become partners in an attempt to host the Memorial Cup.

Bryan Jeannotte also tells me the agenda item mentions a formal bid to host the 2013 event will be submitted to the Western Hockey League next year by the Hurricanes organization.

In any event, CJOC News will be staffing the City Council meeting on Tuesday and I will post reaction from Council to the Hurricanes scheduled presentation.

Thanks,
Pat
