Hurricanes Alumni Golf Tourney Set for July 9th

The 4th annual Hurricanes/Broncos Alumni Golf Tournament is set for Friday, July 9th at Paradise Canyon.

A number of former Hurricanes players have already committed to be at the event. I took some time this week to speak with Dick Gibson, who is the chair of the Alumni Committee.

Pat: The tournament is set to go. Who all will be attending?

Gibson: "A number of names familiar with Canes' fans will be on the course. Zach Boychuk, Colton Sceviour, Carter Bancks, Colton Yellowhorn, and Rob Klinkhammer. Those are the highlight names that will be playing in the tournament."

Pat: How many golfers have signed up to play?

Gibson: "We're sitting around maybe 60 golfers right now. We're certainly looking for a higher number, so we've now opened the event up to the general public. The fee is $250.00 and that includes the golf, a cart, entry prizes, and dinner."

Pat: This is the 4th annual tournament. I know the event wasn't held last year, but how did it get started in the first place?

Gibson: "Well, it actually started five years ago. It was an idea that we would try and keep the alumni involved with the Hurricanes after they've graduated and moved on. Certainly the success of this tournament is only geared by the amount of alumni that turn out."

What can people do if they want to play in tournament?

Gibson: "All they have to do is call the Hurricanes office at 328-1986. They have all the forms there. Registration is Friday morning July 9th and tee off is slated for 1pm"

Dick also told me that he's still waiting to hear from Stanley Cup Champion Kris Versteeg to see if he might be able to play in the golf tournament as well. Versteeg's time lately is at a premium with the Stanley Cup coming to Lethbridge for the day this Saturday, July 3. I also found out a few other names will be teeing it up as well including Rob Fritz, Randy Maxwell, Bryan Maxwell, and Bob Loucks.

There are plenty of prizes to be won, including three hole-in-one prizes. There are secondary awards for an "ace" which includes a trip to Maui, Atlantic City, and Fairmont Resorts.

Thanks,
Pat
