Great to be Golden!!

Where were you when Canada beat the U.S.A for gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver?

That will be the question people in this country will ask each other for days, weeks, months, and likely even years to come. I can tell you where I was. I was standing in the middle of a shopping mall in Calgary watching with about 300 other people on a bunch of TV screens. That wasn't my first choice of venues to watch the big game. I had to go pick up my wife and kids at the airport as they were coming home from visiting family on Vancouver Island and it just so happened that their plane landed during the biggest hockey game this country has ever witnessed. As you know, it went from nervous excitement in the final minute, to utter shock with 20 seconds to go, and then screams and tears of joy as Sidney Crosby scored the game winner to give Canada a record 14 gold medals at the Winter Games! That's where I was. In the words of the great Calgary Flames broadcaster Peter Maher who called the game on the radio, "Yeah Baby!!!!" Canada may have not won the most medals at this Olympics, but they won the most gold and to me that's as good as it gets. Did Canada "Own the Podium"? You darn rights we did! Canada winning in men's hockey was simply the icing on the cake. I can tell you I've always been a patriotic, flag waving, maple leaf wearing Canadian, but after watching these Olympic games the passed two weeks and hearing our great national anthem 14, count them....14 times and I'll admit getting very teary-eyed each time it played...I've never been more proud to be from this great country.....I've never been more proud to be Canadian!!

Hurricanes This Week

Fred Jack and I will be back in studio tonight to host another edition of Hurricanes This Week. Coming up on tonight's program we'll speak with Canes' rookie forward and team goal leader Mitch Maxwell, Associate Coach Matt Kabayama will join us too, and we'll also chat with Rod Pedersen the radio voice of the Regina Pats. It all starts tonight on CJOC at 6pm (MT).

Thanks,
Pat

  1. What a great game, what a great outcome!

Its just a game, yet somehow its not. The Canadian team (and nation) got the lead, then tried their best NOT to lose to the USA, but Sidney plays to win... so he did!

Who better to assist on and score Canada's record 14th gold medal goal (Crosby, from Iginla, Niedermeyer) Canada's most humble professional hockey player and most "Canadian-like citizen" is also our biggest star of the century. What a great moment when the medal presenter paused to allow the crowd to cheer, and to allow the humble Crosby to form a rare smile.

Congratulations to Toews for his invaluable defensive contributions throughout the tourney, and for scoring his first goal of the tournament putting the USA down for their first time in the tournament.

Thank you to the USA's Ralalski, who almost single-handedly handed Canada our only loss in the Olympics and who chased Brodeur out of the net to give Luongo the biggest opportunity in hockey of his life, and for being the first American player to hang his head after watching Crosby beat him to the net to score that golden goal!

To all the usual arrogant and cocky American players and announcers (Kane, Kesler, Roenick), the loss couldn't happen to more deserving fellows. Not so sorry to see Tortorella on the losing bench either. Nobody on the planet needs more servings of humble pie more than he does.

Great job by the "media consortium" in the olympics, and especially by NBC for removing all commercials during the third period.

    Oh Canada! - Go Canes!

  2. Pat! Since we aren't going to get any playoff hockey this year, what do you think about promoting "White-out" to Cane fans (to support the boys and their excellent efforts this year) for the remaining three games of the regular season?? Would you be willing to spread the word?

It would be great if the Canes office would promote a White-out-sell-out by allowing another unused ticket exchange for all fans wearing WHITE for Fridays game against the Hat. Got any pull there??

We should really send the Tigers into the post-season with one final drubbing, don't you think??
