B.O.D. Interviewing for G.M. Position

I got a call late Friday afternoon from Herman Elfring, the Hurricanes Governor to give me an update on where the Board of Directors is in terms of hiring the team's next General Manager.

Elfring: "We've followed a pretty strict process that we've implemented and over the course of the last few days we've interviewed 3 candidates. I can tell you that in excess of 12 candidates applied or showed interest for the position and we're interviewing a couple more next week. By the end of the week, next week we hope to have a candidate in place that we can get board approval on and by the following week make an announcement on it."

Pat: What about the quality of the candidates?

Elfring: "Some of them are very experienced. Most have experience in our league and some have experience in the National Hockey League as well."

Pat: How important is it for the board to get this right and pick the right man for the job?

Elfring: "Well, we think it's critical and again we've said many times that the timing is ideal for us because we're not backed into a situation where we've got to bring somebody in on either an interim basis or short term basis, so that's why we're taking our time to make sure we do it right and research all the candidates and interview the people we think are at the top of our list and make sure we get somebody that's committed to our organization and here for a long time. We understand we need some stability in our organization and we've had probably too many changes over the last couple of years, but again we think this is the right time."

Thanks to Herman for calling me for an update.

On a side note, I found out late Friday evening that a group of shareholders has organized a meeting set for this Monday night. I've been told the purpose is to get a feeling from Hurricanes shareholders and the public as to what they feel of the current situation with the hockey club and what they would like to see in the future. The group is hoping one to two hundred people show up. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 8th from 7 to 10 pm at the Eagles Hall on the northside.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. It will be time to drop the puck on the 2009-10 season before the board has a coach in place. All the top candidates are getting hired elsewhere so we will get the left overs.

  2. what a mess. talk about not being able to hold it together. after 15-16 years of being the joke of teh league, they almost made it out but chose to go back in and be a joke. what a mess.
