Hurricanes End Six Game Losing Skid

Stuart Skinner was the game's first star and deservedly so as the Lethbridge Hurricanes ended a long losing skid Tuesday night with 2-1 shootout victory in Edmonton.

It was an entertaining hockey game as the Canes played the defending WHL and Memorial Cup Champs tight. The difference in this game was Skinner between the pipes.  The 15 year old goaltender was bombarded with shots and stole the victory for the visitors. Edmonton out shot Lethbridge 47-28.

The game was scoreless through 40 minutes of play when Tyler Wong finally broke the goose eggs with his 2nd goal of the season to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead at the 1:50 mark of the 3rd period.  Edmonton though got that one back at 10:53 when Andrew Koep evened the score at 1-1. That eventually sent the game to overtime. The extra period solved nothing, but in the shootout Jamal Watson scored the lone goal and that turned out to be the difference as the Canes stole a 2-1 win. The victory improves their overall record to 2-8-0-1 in 11 games this season. The Hurricanes went 0/3 on the power play and the Oil Kings 0/2.

The Hurricanes now head to Saskatchewan for three games in three days this weekend. Their next action is Friday night (Oct. 24) in Saskatoon.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. This was a superb game by the very young Stuart Skinner. He deserves all the accolades he will be receiving. The team now needs to put this one behind them though and get focused on the next game. Good luck this weekend.

    1. Comments like this are sadly the norm for many of those negative posters . If this is an attempt at humor , you failed . Try something intelligent please.

  4. Is is evident that with the exceptional talent and skill of young Mr. Skinner he creates an opportunity for Mr. Robson to exchange him with Brandon for assets with less tangible value. Empirical history has shown us that a player like Mr. Skinner has great value in the minds of others and should garner returns not equal to his market value. Is that intelligent enough?

    1. Today it would be Hawryluk and Quenneville, for Skinner, if Skinner quits, that's when McCrimmon uses the power of the "Dark Side" to over power our grossly in-experienced GM and he seems powerless to stop it..LOL The trick is to provide a strong development program so that these players do not defect, it's not rocket science?

    2. No !. it is not intelligent at all.It simply displays a diarrhea of words and a constipation of anything with substance . If you have something better to offer try again , if not, have a good day .

    3. Skinner is making a bigger impact at 16 in the WHL than Kyle Clague. This in my opinion was a BRILLIANT trade by Mr Robson!!

    4. Trade? He was drafted by us.

    6. Good to know. I guess we'll see in thhe long run how this works out but skinner has definitely earned us our 5 points so far.

    7. Brilliant? That's a stretch. Every team wanted this kid. Must be one of BR's scouts (aka family) giving themselves a pat on the back again. Was it brilliant that BR has traded away most of our picks next year, picked a bunch of no name Euros (vs. going with known skilled players), or the recent Wheat Kings debacle? Dumb luck we got Skinner.

  5. Trading Skinner is a ludicrous idea. This team needs to start building with their young talent and quit trading it all away. Isn't that what the majority have been saying all along? What good does having a couple of players who may help us marginally for a year or two when we have nothing left when they are gone again?

    1. Trading Bellerive is NOT a ludicrous idea though? So far it does not look like there will be much (if any) in the improvement of the development portion of the Canes program this season. That said, Bellerive will likely never sign here anyways, the team could use a real shot in the arm right now, maybe trading him now for two or three high end players makes sense? Also, looks like Nejescleb has been returned to the Brandon team, he would likely contribute significantly more in a Euro role here than we currently have...but one of our 20s would then have to go as he would be a two spotter, lots of options to improve the team, wonder if anyone has the nads to pull the trigger on any further deals this year???

    2. Your comment is right on the mark. What better way is there than to build a team around a talented goal tender that will not even enter his NHL draft year for a few more years? Surround him with decent young talent that will also be here for more than a year or two , then we will have a much improved team . That is how teams are built .

    3. Yes, with a player like Nejescleb in a two spot role that would also open up another roster spot for one more young player to get more ice time and the reality is that none of our 20's are the key to the future of this team at this point. Good teams succeed with strong PROACTIVE decision making by their management. The current management group here has proven that they believe in the REACTIVE (gun to the head) decision making process. I agree that we need to make a few more moves right now to improve the team which in turn will improve the morale of this group over the next 61 games. But, the arrogant mind set will likely prevail again and we will end up trading Bellerive in a reactive situation when he informs us that that he wants to be traded next summer, improving the team now is an appealing thought at many different levels, it would improve the team, improve the confidence of the players and last but not least, it might even improve the fan's support for the remainder of this season, (more $$$) heaven forbid that we could actually make positive move right now when we could really use one...

  6. Jake I never commented on Bellerive just Skinner. If the BOD can show Bellerive and other future Hurricanes that they are behind them and willing to do what it takes to make a difference the players will be willing to sign here. Do nothing, leave Robson and Berehowsky at the helm and they let the hockey world know that they are not concerned that our players are not developing. Who would possibly sign here then. The organization must show the current and future players that they have their backs. Doing nothing speaks volumes that the players are not the priority here.

  7. Trade the whole team to another city or town so we don't have to listen to ya,ll wine. Your city doesn't deserve a Dub team.

  8. nejezlab for skinner and estephan sounds about fair..thoughts?

    1. We would have Nejezlab only for the rest of this year, have to get rid of one of our other 20 year olds and one of our imports . What would you do next year? I'm sure glad you're not calling the shots . That would be an unbelievable bad trade.

  9. Isn't there a player that hasn't reported than can be thrown into the deal? Add in a couple brandon scrubs and it sounds about right.

    1. Finally a RARE positive comment !!!!! Nice to see !!!. Maybe there is sunshine above all those dark , gloomy clouds that always seem to hang over our city. give credit when credit is due.
I am sure the players are aware of all the negativity around here . It must be very difficult for them to stay positive and have confidence which plays a very big part in the game . You rarely do well without confidence. Let the team know we are behind them.
