Warriors Rout Hurricanes 6-2

MOOSE JAW, SK - A four goal first period powered the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 6-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night.

The Hurricanes were hoping for a better start than the night before in Brandon, but it didn't go exactly as planned. Just over two minutes into the period, Moose Jaw would opening the scoring when Eric Arnold fired the puck between the legs of Liam Liston, making it 1-0 Warriors. Moose Jaw would keep it coming. Halfway through the period, they'd make it 2-0. Quinton Howden buried a rebound by Liston to give the home side a bit of insurance. They weren't there either. Five minutes later, Joel Edmundson hammered a point shot past Liston giving Moose Jaw a big 3-0 lead. That would be it for Liam Liston who was pulled after letting in 3 goals on 8 shots. Damien Ketlo came in to relieve Liston and the first shot he faced went in. Kenton Miller's shot got by Ketlo to make it 4-0 Warriors. The Canes had given up 4 goals on 9 shots at that point. When the period was over, Moose Jaw took that lead into the dressing room and held a 12-9 edge in shots.

In the second, Moose Jaw would get another early goal on a 5-on-3 power play. Justin Kirsch fired home a wrist shot into the top corner giving the Warriors a 5-0 lead. A few minutes later the Canes would get into some serious penalty trouble. Landon Oslanski took a 4 minute spearing penalty and then Nick Bounassisi was called for slashing and roughing and that put Moose Jaw on a two man power play for 3:45. The Canes managed to kill that off, but the Warriors would end up scoring later in the period when Joel Edmundson notched his second of the night to make it 6-0 Warriors. Lethbridge would get one late on a power play as Jaimen Yakubowski scored his 14th of the season to cut the Moose Jaw lead to 6-1 after 40 minutes. The shots were 25-13 Warriors after two periods.

In the third, the Hurricanes would play a much better period of hockey. The kept the Warriors off the shore sheet and scored themselves for the only goal of the period. Late in the game Adam Henry scored his 4th of the season on a power play to make it 6-2 Moose Jaw and that's the way things would finish. Moose Jaw out shot the Hurricanes 32-21. Lethbridge went 2/4 on the power play and the Warriors finished the night 2/8. Assistant Coach Chisamore said on the CJOC post game show, "You can't spot teams big leads and put yourselves in a hole, especially on the road. That happened to us tonight."

Discipline was a big issue for Lethbridge in this game. Brody Sutter sat out his 3rd straight game with back spasms. The Captain didn't play on this road trip at all. He's hoping to be back in the line-up back at home next week. The Hurricanes are also hopeful that Brady Ramsay will get back in the line-up before the end of the season as well.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes are now homeward bound as they get set for the final three game of the season at the ENMAX Centre this coming week. The Canes will host Moose Jaw Tuesday (Mar. 6) and then play Calgary Friday (Mar. 9) and Medicine Hat Saturday (Mar. 10). The Hurricanes will play their last three games of the year on the road the following week in Calgary, Red Deer and Medicine Hat.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. I'll say discipline was a big issue! That's an understatement Pat! The goaltending didn't seem to be a high priority in this one either! Regroup again........

  2. Any idea Pat why the Canes didnt call up Reid Duke since I believe his season with the Royals was over on the 24th of Feb?

  3. Meh, it's Moose Jaw. Canes didn't win a lot when it was the crushed can, either.

  4. I believe Duke call-ups have been maxed out. Only allowed 5 games or something like that I think.

  5. Once a player's Midget AAA is finished for the year, his WHL team can call him up for the remainder of the season, regardless of his 5 game limit.

  6. FYI. Just got word that Reid Duke has been called up to play tonight against the Warriors. He's got 5 points in 7 games with the Hurricanes as a call up this season.
