Canes Prospects Looking to Telus Cup

The road to the Telus Cup is heating up and some Lethbridge Hurricanes Prospects are in the thick of the race.

The Saskatoon Contacts won the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League in 4 games Friday with a 2-1 win over the Prince Albert Mintos. The series featured 2011 Hurricanes Bantam Draft picks Bryton Sayers (Mintos) and Kolten Olynek (Contacts) battling through the four games. Olynek, the Canes 2nd round pick, closed out the postseason with 13 points (5G, 8A) which was second overall in playoff scoring. The Contacts will now represent the SMAAAHL at the Telus Cup Western Regionals in Virden, Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Wild join the Contacts at the Western Regionals after a 5-2 win over the Southwest Cougars gave them a 3 game sweep in the Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League. The Hurricanes 8th round draft pick in 2010, Remi Laurencelle finished 2nd in league scoring with 73 points (24G, 49A) in 43 games and he followed that up with 15 points (7G, 8A) in 8 playoff games.

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels are one win away from winning the Alberta Midget Hockey League Title. Canes 2nd round pick last year, Joel Topping, and his Rebel teammates are up 2 games to none over St. Albert and they can finish off the 3 game sweep of the Raiders at home tomorrow night. The winner of this series will face the BC Champions – the Vancouver NW Giants – in the Pacific Region Championship.

The 2012 Telus Cup takes place in Leduc, AB from April 23rd to 29th and will be represented by the 5 Regional Champions (West, Quebec, Pacific, Central and Atlantic) and the host Leduc Oil Kings.

  1. Speaking of prospects. Congratulations to former Hurricane goaltender Damien Ketlo (now a PROSPECT of Colorado of the ECHL) who posted a 27 save win and a shutout in his very first game. Damien was also named the first star of the game.

    No one deserves it more!
