Hurricanes Deal Overager Marantz to Regina

Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager/Head Coach, Rich Preston, announced today the Canes have traded overage Right Winger Matt Marantz to the Regina Pats in exchange for a 4th round WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2013. Marantz, a Calgary native, was acquired on September 29th from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for 4th round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. The 91-born 6’0 190 pound forward played one game with the Chiefs this season before being acquired by Lethbridge where in 6 games he registered 5 assists, had 2 PIM’s and was a -5 plus/minus rating. In 115 career WHL games, Marantz has 52 points (22G, 30A), 106 PIM’s and a +11 plus/minus rating.

Of Marantz, Head Coach and GM Rich Preston said “he’s been a good player and a real good competitor for us in his short time here. We wish him all the best of luck in Regina.” Today’s trade of Marantz cuts down the Lethbridge Hurricanes overage situation ahead of Thursday’s 20 year old cutdown deadline, but still leaves the team with four on the roster – Cam Braes, Austin Fyten, 2011 NHL Draft pick Brody Sutter and Damien Ketlo.

  1. Good to see something is perculating....I guess this probably means Anderson will be moved soon maybe with others...something had to be done. TD

  2. I am not surprised one bit with this move. After seeing Anderson slam his stick on the glass and then again in the hallway (heard that one along with some expletives), it was most obvious that he is not happy here. Frankly his "glove hand" will not be missed one bit. With a veteran overage goaltender that loves to compete, he will likely have a settling affect on our defense. One thing that Ketlo and Kovacs have in common is that they play to the end of the game regardless of the score. Anderson is worth something now and would not be next season. It is a move that will steady the club and help with Kovac's development.
Now Preston needs to deal Anderson along with Hood and Oslanski and when he is done with that, fire his coach.

  3. I do think now is the opportunity to shop Anderson around. Ketlo is a good goaltender who will serve as a great lead-in for Kovacs by setting a good example for him to follow. I think Anderson is ready for a change of scenery and we has some great trade value. Might as well do it now.

Or Anderson and RYCKMAN. I don't know if I can handle seeing a guy that big look so scared to HIT someone much longer.

  5. I don't see where everyone thinks Anderson has great trade value. Yes, he signed an NHL contract, but he has shown nothing last year and the start of this year to SHOW value that would be great.

  6. Off topic, but it was just announced that Saskatoon gets the 2013 Mem Cup. $$$$$$ talks and the WHL board of governors listened. My money was on Red Deer.

  7. Very sad to see Marantz go. I thought he was a good player who worked every night, more than I can say for others. I am happy to see them still have Ketlo. I think he will be very good for Kovacs.

Would like to see Anderson hit the road along with Ryckman. Anderson's compete level is next to non existent. Anderson's attitude since getting the contract from the Capitals has left alot to be desired. It is interesting when you check the Capitals web site they do not list Anderson as a prospect. I wonder if they have seen his terrible catching hand. Ryckman gives the puck away too much and is liability. Hood would also be a candidate to be moved. He has taken a bunch of stupid penalties.

  8. Anderson is not a prospect he's a signed player. At least know what your talking about. I'm sure Ketlo is a great person, but sadly he to just lost to Red Deer, but I'm sure it was an amazing loss. As for Marantz, I'm sure he to was a wonderful person,he did so much for our team. This team should be called Sanford and Sons instead of the Hurricanes. We take other teams players they don't want, call them our own, and trade them for a bag of beans. 9. One down, one to go. STILL have four 20 year olds....

    Braes, Fyten, Sutter, Ketlo.

Max of only 3, right? Preston was saying he was dealing Ketlo, but I take it that there was no interest, so now we are playing him and keeping him??

How do we solve this problem? Is Fyten going on some kind of conditional "loan", or will he be traded altogether to a playoff bound club? - Richie

  10. Richie,
Fyten is on injured reserve for 6 months. As long as he's not activated he's not taking up an overage spot. With Ketlo, Braes, and Sutter as the 20's, Fyten's status does not go against the overage quota for Lethbridge.

  11. RJS..."Anderson is worth something now"?? I don't think a goalie who isn't playing well is worth much more than a 4th rounder. He would have to be part of a bigger package to garner anything of significance. He just hasn't shown improvement and has actually taken a step back.

  12. BBM if you would check the Washington Caps site you would see that in their prospects list they also have Cody Eakin listed. He has signed a pro contract as well. The Caps list a number of people as prospects that have signed contracts. They still do not have Anderson listed. Don't know what to make of this just an observation. Huh!
