The Lethbridge Hurricanes will take on the Kelowna Rockets tonight at the ENMAX Centre.
This will be game five of a six game home-stand for the Canes'. They're coming off a 6-5 shootout loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday.
CJOC's Esther Madziya spoke to G.M. and Head Coach Rich Preston this week about a number of things, including staying out of the penalty box.
Preston: "We're allowing too many goals against right now. Early on scoring was the problem, but that hasn't been the case lately. Probably the biggest thing is the power play goals against and we have to be a lot more disciplined. We're also giving the opposition too many chances 5-on-3 and 4-on-3. Our penalty killing was really good earlier in the year, but it's allowed 15 power play goals against over the last few weeks."
On Monday night, Hurricanes Assistant G.M. Brad Robson spoke with Fred and I on Hurricanes This Week. We asked him about the upcoming trade deadline. He said, "both Rich and I have spoken to pretty much every WHL team over the passed few weeks and will continue talking until the January 10th deadline." Preston told CJOC Monday that "I think we'll definitely look at improving our club and adding more depth." I suppose if you read between the lines on what both Brad and Rich are saying, there is likely more to come for this team over the next three weeks.
Tonight will be the first of two meetings this season between the Hurricanes and Rockets. The clubs will meet again March 3rd in Kelowna. Lethbridge goes into action tonight in 8th place in Eastern Conference, two points back of Edmonton. Game time is 7:00 pm (MST). The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30.
Thanks,
Pat

On the subject of teams from BC,
ReplyDeletehow does the WHL scoring leader,'92 born (Edmonton) Kamloops Blazer Brendan Ranford (26G/24A +6) not even get an invite to the 2011 IIHF Team selection camp ???
Instead they invite (and select) #64 on the WHL scoring list the talented but lazy Carter Ashton?? He wasn't even the Regina Pats best player!! (16G/11A -12 in 29 games, vs Jordan Weal 15G/26A -3 in 34 games)
Last year the USA beat us in this tournament with SPEED and relentless hard work, and we choose our team using the formula of FAMOUS NHL NAMES?
So many players in the WHL deserved invites to this camp, and they pick Ashton... It sure pays to have connections!
