Hurricanes Support 2012 World Women's Curling Event

Lethbridge will be playing host to a major international curling event in 2012, right around the same time the WHL playoffs will begin.

Lethbridge has been given the 2012 World Women's Curling Championship, which will be the first major event to be held at the newly-renovated ENMAX Centre. The Canadian Curling Association didn't even put the event out to bid, just awarded it to Lethbridge based on the success of the 2007 Scotties Tournament of Hearts which was hosted by the City.

The curling event is scheduled for March 17 to 25th, 2012 which would be right around the same time the Hurricanes regular season would be ending and the start of the Western Hockey League playoffs. ENMAX Centre General Manager Kim Gallucci says the hockey club fully supports the event. "The Hurricanes have been great! They realize this event is very good for the community. We talked to them first about this and they're prepared to work around this event. They have enough time to make those adjustments with the league so they've been great about it."

Lethbridge City Council has approved spending $145,000 to cover operating expenses to host the event.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Great for the city to get such a prestigous event. It certainly add to the credibility of this city hosting the Mem Cup. The only drawback is that the Hurricanes will have to play their first round of the playoffs on the road. No home games.
    Good on Lethbridge!
