LETHBRIDGE - Adam Morrison stopped all 37 shots he faced as the the Saskatoon Blades blanked the Hurricanes 4-0 Saturday night at the ENMAX Centre.
The Saskatoon Blades opened the scoring just passed the mid-way point in the first period when Stefan Elliott scored on a wrist shot while the Hurricanes were on a 5 on 3 power play. That shorthanded marker put the visitors up 1-0. The Canes' were unable to muster anything on that man advantage. Before the end of the period the Blades would go up 2-0. Marek Viedensky cashed in a rebound to give the Blades a two goal lead. That's the way the period would end. Brandon Anderson was great in goal for the Hurricanes in the opening period. He made three or four huge saves, despite allowing those two goals. The shots were even through one period 12-12. Both teams had good chances, but the Blades had the best of those scoring opportunities.
In the second, the Blades would finally get their power play going. Saskatoon went up 3-0 when Brent Benson scored his first goal of the season with the extra man. The Blades weren't done there. With just over three minutes left in the period, Levi Bews scored his first ever WHL goal to put the visitors up 4-0. That's the way the period would end. The Blades held the edge in shots through two periods 27-26.
In the third, no offence from either team. Two goals in the first and two more in the second would be all the Blades needed on this night. The Hurricanes did outshoot the Saskatoon Blades 37-34 on the night. The final power play chances: Saskatoon 1/6 Lethbridge 0/6. The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 3-4-0-2 through 9 games this season. The Lethbridge power play continues to struggle. They are now 0 for their last 36 chances with the man advantage and last night gave up a shorthanded goal to the Blades.
As for last night's opponent, it's pretty obvious this Saskatoon team is as good and their record indicates. They are good, play a solid game, and have good depth too. The win for the Blades was a big milestone for that hockey club. Now at 8-1 through the first 9 games of the year, the record is the best start in Saskatoon Blades franchise history. These two teams will meet again next weekend in Saskatoon.
Next Up
The Hurricanes will head out on the road now for the next three games. On Monday afternoon, the team will be packing up and driving east to Saskatchewan. On Wednesday the Hurricanes will play the Pats in Regina. Then it's off to Saskatoon Friday and Prince Albert Saturday. The Canes' next home action will be October 27th when they play host to Vancouver. All games can be heard on 94.1, CJOC.
Thanks,
Pat

RThank Gawd for Mr. Anderson! This kid has become an absolute beast. Too bad his stays won't reflect it as guys like Ryckman can't clear a rebound not tie up an opponent's stick.
ReplyDeleteNow, get Reners off the team. Preston obviously hates him and he Reners shows no desire to be on this team based on his effort level.
Moser just quit already. You are awful. Way to back down to Gogol, Ryckman. Now he owns you!
That was one hour and twenty minutes I will never get back. OY!
I'm sure Tot did himself no favors playing injured. He must be feeling it today.
Loving Anderson!

I do have to wonder why Preston doesn't play Reners more, especially since he had such a great couple of games in the pre-season before he was injured. It has to be hard for the kid who just wants to play so he can improve and isn't given the opportunity. I still believe that given the chance to grow, Reners could be a huge leader on this team. I am curious as to whether or not PReston will ever allow that to happen.
