A much better start to this game for the Hurricanes, but it would be the Silvertips who opened the scoring in this one. After a solid first five minutes, Landon Ferraro beat Dylan Tait over the glove to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Canes' had a glorious chance to tie the game late, when Jacob Berglund missed a wide open net on a two-on-one rush. That would prove very costly for Lethbridge as the game went on. The Tips out shot the Canes' 7-5 in the first.
In the second, the Silvertips would go up 2-0 when Tyler Maxwell beat Tait to give Everett some insurance in this game. The Hurricanes some good chances in the second, but couldn't find a way to beat Kent Simpson in the Everett goal. The Silvertips had the edge in shots after 40 minutes, 22-16.
In the third, Lethbridge scored to cut the lead in half. Max Ross scored after a getting a drop pass from Russ Maxwell. That put the Canes' right back into the game. Lethbridge would get some great chances to tie the game with a couple of power plays, but that would be as close as the Hurricanes would get in this one. Both teams were 0/4 on the power play and for the first time in four games this season, the Hurricanes out shot their opponents. The final shots were 27-25 Lethbridge.
Overall, the Hurricanes I thought played a decent game in Everett. They got off to their best start this season in terms of play in the first period despite being down 1-0 after one. The out shot Everett as well and had a strong third period. Dylan Tait played well in goal too. Perhaps he would've liked to have that first goal by Ferraro back, but that's the way it goes. I though Jacob Berglund was the best orward for the Hurricanes. He had a number of chances in this game.
Last night, the Canes' got back a few players who've been on the injury list. Austin Fyten was inserted back into the line-up after missing one game with a shoulder injury. Reid Jackson played his first game of the season. He's been out a few weeks with a hip-pointer. He played left-wing on a line with Mike Sofillas and Alex Kuvaev to start the game.
Next Up
The Hurricanes will finish off this U.S. road trip tonight when they play the Portland Winterhawks. The Hawks had a great season last year and have come a long way over the past couple of seasons when Portland was at the bottom of the WHL. They should be a force to be reckoned with again this year. They are stacked with talent and NHL draft picks. What a difference a few seasons, some good drafting, and timely trades can make. This will also mark the return of Daniel Johnston and Jacob Berglund to Lethbridge. Both players were acquired by the Canes' at the trade deadline last season when Lethbridge sent Luca Sbisa to the Winterhawks along with the swapping of import draft picks. The Hurricanes will play this game at the Rose Garden, which is home to the NBA's Portland Trailblazers. The Hawks have been hoping to play more and more of their regular season games at the Rose Garden. Their main home is next door at the aging Portland Memorial Coliseum. Game time today is 6pm (MDT). The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30. After that, the Hurricanes will head back on the bus and travel all night back to Lethbridge. They'll prepare this coming week for their first two home games of the regular season next Friday and Saturday nights.
Thanks,
Pat
