Canes' Take Goalie With 4th Round Pick

EDMONTON - The Lethbridge Hurricanes have chosen goaltender Ryan Ferguson from Calgary with their only pick in the 4th round of the WHL Bantam draft.

Ferguson was taken 69th overall. He last played in Cowichan, B.C.

Ferguson is the Hurricanes highest drafted goaltender since 2007 when the club drafted Brandon Anderson with the 50th overall selection in the third round. The 6'0, 165 lbs. Ferguson finished his AMBHL season with a solid .906 save percentage and a 3.04 GAA while playing with the Calgary Royals (Gold) of the AMBHL.

"Our scouts identified Ryan as a leader on his hockey club this season," said Robson. "Physically he has a big body and he plays big. He plays a high arc and has very good lateral movement with a quick glove."

The Canes' picks so far:

1. (C) Jay Merkley
2. (C) Craig Leverton
3. (D) Macoy Erkamps
4. (D) Joel Topping
5. (G) Ryan Ferguson

More to follow.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. The first 5 picks in this year's draft by the Hurricanes has given us a good indication of the job done by Rich Preston, Brad Robson, Rich Sutter and the scouting staff. The Canes have drafted quality of character, skill and leadership. The thing that strikes me is the balance of the first 5 picks. Two highly skilled forwards, two talented d-men and a goaltender with size and skill. The Hurricanes may have been out of the playoff picture, but Preston's decision to move talent for draft picks will certainly go a long way in maintaining a competitive team for seasons to come. It is a very positive move and when you blend the talent drafted by Preston and Robson along with the talent drafted by Stasiuk and Robson, it makes for a very solid list. And unless Preston decides to move one of his two first round picks in the 2011 draft, there will be more talent added to the list.
