The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club have signed prospect Noah Boyko to a Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreement.
Boyko, 15, was selected in the first round (16th overall) in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft earlier this month. The product of St. Albert, Alberta suited up in 36 regular season games with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League where he registered 52 points (25g-27a) along with 14 penalty minutes. He finished tied for second on his team in scoring.
“I was just hoping to get drafted and I’m pretty happy being drafted by Lethbridge. It’s a great organization and I’m glad to be a part of it,” said Boyko. “I didn’t even think about it, we just read over the rules and contract, and just signed.”
In two seasons with the Rangers, Boyko collected 79 points (43g-36a) in 69 games. He enjoyed a strong 2017 playoffs as well with the Rangers adding 18 points (7g-11a) with four penalty minutes in 14 post-season games finishing second in league playoff scoring. He helped the Rangers to an AMBHL and Provincial Championship, helping them advance to the 2017 Western Bantam Championships where he added ten more points (6g-4a) in five games.
“I think it’s great to sign your first round pick. We knew there wasn’t going to be any troubles but at the same sense it makes summer that much better when you can sign these guys early and you don’t have to worry about it throughout the summer,” said Hurricanes Head Scout Rob MacLachlan. “He’s very well-spoken and he’s very smart. When we signed him and looked over the contract he asked some really good questions, so that shows that he pays attention to detail and he definitely wants to be a Lethbridge Hurricane.”
“He can play centre or wing. He has good acceleration and covers a lot of ice with his long stride. He likes to be moving at full speed and he shoots the puck hard. I’d compare him to Justin Gutierrez; probably a touch better skater and maybe a little bit better skill. He’s a big tall, lanky kid with some bite in him,” added MacLachlan.
