Canes Deal Carter Folk to Victoria

The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Monday that the team has traded overage forward Carter Folk to the Victoria Royals in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in the 2017 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
Folk, 20, was originally acquired by the Hurricanes in trade with Riley Sheen in October of 2013 from the Seattle Thunderbirds. In parts of three seasons with the Hurricanes, Folk appeared in 171 games collecting 61 points (26g-35a) along with 296 penalty minutes. The Regina, Saskatchewan product added one goal in three post-season games last year.
“It’s a hard, hard day today. The thing about Carter is he came here in a trade from Seattle for some players that didn’t want to play here and he was a big reason for the turn around here,” said Hurricanes General Manager, Peter Anholt. “We’re sending Carter to a real good organization, so that’s makes it a little bit easier.”
Folk set career highs during the 2015-2016 season dressing in 66 games while registering 31 points (10g-21a) along with 77 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating. The forward was an Assistant Captain on the team for the past two campaigns.
“In the dressing room, I don’t think you’re going to find a nicer kid. Any time you’re moving a quality person like Carter, it’s hard, but you take solace in the fact of where he’s going,” Anholt added. “He’ll be missed. His presence on the ice and how he plays the game with that reckless abandonment and the sandpaper he brings to the game was very important for our hockey club.”
The Hurricanes are now down to the WHL maximum of three overage players as Tyler Wong, Ryley Lindgren and Kord Pankewicz are the three remaining 1996-born players.

  1. I am okay with both these trades as long as we now address the issue that we have gotten a lot smaller and lost a ton of toughness. Anholt may have to do a bit more bartering to solve this problem.

Both these players were workhorses and it is tough to see them go. I wish them much success with their new teams.

  2. Two huge losses for the Canes..... Both these guys are monsters on the ice. I loved that Folk was unpredictable, kind of psychotic, and several times last season guys tried to run Skeogh only to find themselves brushing the snow off themselves.

In my opinion, Carter Folk was worth far more than a 4th round pick, but I also expected that I wouldn't like whatever trade was made when we decided what 3 twenty year olds we were going to keep.

Rather than calling Anholt a Bone-head for making these moves, I will just say that for me, the games just got less entertaining.

  3. Hey Stewpid...ity. Because you are bordering calling Anholt a bone-head I'd like to hear what trades you would have made. Would you have traded your captain away? Your #1 D-man? or your number 1 faceoff guy and a big body centre that may score 30 goals? Losing Folk sucks, but those were your other options. Skeogh is a tough loss, but be honest with yourself. We trades a 4th-5th d-man for a top pair guy. You make that trade all day long if given the chance.
