Hurricanes Drop 6-5 Decision in Regina

The Lethbridge Hurricanes battled back in the third period, but it wasn't enough as they fell 6-5 to the Pats in Regina Saturday night.

It was only the the third loss in the last 11 games for Lethbridge.

Regina got things going very fast in this one. Just over a minute into the game, Connor Hobbs scored to give the home side a quick 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes regained their composure after that fast strike and tied things up at the 8:20 mark when Egor Babenko put home his 16th of the season to make it a 1-1 game. Before the end of the period though, the Pats would get that one back and add another with a power play goal from Colby Williams and an even strength marker from Adam Berg. The Pats took a 3-1 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes of play.

In the second, The Pats would keep it coming. Rykr Cole, Lane Zablocki, and Sam Steel all scored to put Regina in what looked to be a pretty comfortable 6-1 lead. The Hurricanes would score a couple of times before the end of the period to set up an interesting finish to this game. Ryley Lindgren scored a power play goal, his 13th of the season and then two minutes later Giorgio Estephan scored his 12th of the season to cut the Pats lead to 6-3 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the Hurricanes would try and complete the comeback. Justin Gutierrez scoring his 15th of the season to cut the lead to 6-4 and then a couple of minutes after that Bryaden Burke chipped in with his 8th of the year and just like that it was a one goal game, 6-5 in favour of Regina. The Canes tried everything in the final 8:30 of the game to get the tying goal, but that's as close as they would get, falling 6-5 in this one.

The loss drops the Canes record to 20-11 on the season. They went 1/2 on the power play, and the Pats went 1/3 with the man advantage. It was a close game all around with the Hurricanes holding a slight 36-35 edge in shots on goal. Both Jayden Sittler and Stuart Skinner split the goaltending duties for Lethbridge in this one.

The Hurricanes will continue this six game pre-Christmas break road trip on Tuesday night (Dec. 15) in Prince Albert when they take on the Raiders. PA shut the Hurricanes out in Lethbridge a week ago, It was the only game this season so far in which the Canes failed to score at least once.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. An impressive Pats team performance, and once again the Canes leave that building without a point, though not one of the five unanswered Pats goals was a soft one.

The consistently inconsistent officiating to award the five-on-three to the Pats mid-way through the first gave them a chance to gain momentum, and they cashed in big time. Some questionable defensive play by the Canes during four of those five goals, definitely, though no fault of Sittler on any.

With the Canes goal and momentum swing at 6-2, difficult to believe that the Canes clawed back from 6-1 with four unanswered of their own, yet failed to get the final tally to even it up given that there was still almost nine minutes left to play at 6-5. - A real opportunity lost by the team to own the Pats.

Canes were shut-out by PA in LA in their only game so far this season. Nothing less than a victory should be acceptable to the players; especially after failing in Regina.
